The ongoing story of WWE Superstar Sami Zayn and his absence from last Friday’s Greatest Royal Rumble event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia continues to be a topic of conversation among wrestling fans. There have been conflicting reports regarding why ‘The Underdog from the Underground’ did not travel for the show, even after saying on Monday Night RAW a few days prior that he would be in the Greatest Royal Rumble Match (you can read all our previous coverage on the story here). As we now know, WWE ran an injury angle to explain Zayn not appearing on the show, but the latest speculation today is indicating there could be more to it.
According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Sami reportedly knew a week in advance he would not be going to Saudi Arabia, but was not told the reason why. Additionally, it’s being said that Zayn is telling people close to him that he still does not know why he wasn’t included.
EA’s Take: This is a really hard sell for me. I can’t debunk it fully, but I can tell you why I’m not so certain about it. Sami Zayn is a smart guy and is very involved when it comes to social issues, including where his roots are in Syria. You’re telling me that he has NO idea why he didn’t go to Saudi? To me, there’s one of two things happening here. One: this report is total crap that The Observer is trying to throw against the wall. Two: Sami is very much aware of why he wasn’t at GRR, whether he was told by the company or not, but is not revealing it to those people “close to him”.
