Chairshot Classics: WWE SummerSlam 2002

Howard Finkle is in the ring next and is telling the fans that it is his first time announcing here since WrestleMania 2. He then goes on to take some more jabs at the MLB before he is interrupted by Trish Stratus. When she enters the arena the crowd welcomes her with some nice pop. Her and Howard go back and forth on the mic before she offers an apology for her actions in the previous weeks. Mainly a slap to the face and for pushing him into a pool of mud. Howard has quite the line here saying “In a dog eat dog world, you have the puppies and I have the wiener.” Real life here folks. Lillian Garcia enters from behind and slaps Howard in the face before delivering a low blow. The crowd pops and I guess this segment was just meant to bring the crowd back to earth after that last crazy match.

Finally the Main Event is upon us. A quick video shows how these two individuals got to this point. Brock Lesnar won The King of the Ring and this gained him a Title shot at SummerSlam. The Rock won the Title from Kurt Angle at Vengeance and this sets us up the Main Event. There is some cuts of both men training, but this package just doesn’t have the same feel as the Triple H/Shawn Michaels video. When we return to the arena, Brock Lesnar enters first and is joined by Paul Heyman. When Brock hits the ring he leaps onto the apron then over the ropes. Impressive stuff here. The Universal Champion, The Rock, enters next and the crowd is on their feet. He lays the Strap on the entrance ramp and The Brahma Bull comes charging towards the ring.  They exchange some punches but Brock is quick to hit a belly-to-belly toss and go right for a cover. The rock kicks out and the fans are after him early with the “Rocky Sucks” chants. Brock easily picks up Rock up above his head and drops him on his knee for a backbreaker. Lesnar throws The Rock from the ring and distracts the ref which this opens a window for  Heyman to get some cheap kicks in. Brock joins Rock on the outside and clotheslines him into the fans. He picks The Rock up next and drops him onto the security wall before clotheslining him back to ringside. He returns The Rock to the ring and is quick with another belly-to-belly throw. This sets up another cover attempt and another two count for Lesnar. The Rock starts to battle back with some left hands, but when he comes off the ropes Heyman yanks his feet out from under him. This allows Lesnar to go back on the offensive. Another cover attempt follows a powerslam, but again The Rock kicks-out. Brock puts The Rock in the corner next and continues to target the ribs with shoulder blocks. When he takes a few steps back and charges, The Rock moves and Lesnar’s shoulder meets the ring post. Rock hits a back suplex and this leaves both men on the mat, as the ref starts his count. The ref makes it to five before the both nip up and the crowd explodes for this. The Rock tries to take Lesnar down with a clothesline but he just absorbs it and beats his chest afterward. The Rock bounces off the ropes and ducks under Lesnar’s clothesline, and when The Rock hits a diving forearm, it brings Brock to the mat. A cover is made after The Rock delivers a DDT but Lesnar again narrowly kicks out.

The Rock applies a sharpshooter but he releases it when Heyman is on the apron creating a distraction. The Rock lays Heyman out with a left hand and the crowd explodes for this. Lesnar get to his feet but The Rock is quick to lay him out with a clothesline and reapply the sharpshooter. The Rock, once again, lets go of the hold because Heyman is on the apron again. This time he has a chair but that doesn’t matter to The Rock and he slingshots Heyman over the top rope and into the ring. The Rock attempts to Rock Bottom Heyman but Lesnar stops it with a clothesline to the back. This leads to the ref being distracted by Heyman and Brock uses the time to deliver a chairshot to the ribs of The Rock. Brock continues to target the ribs, this time with a bear hug. The Rock tries to wiggle free but Lesnar suplexs him to the mat and manages to keep the hold applied. At this time we hear the “lets go Lesnar” chants from the fans. Most people at this time were aware that Rocky was leaving the WWE to pursue his acting career more. This would obviously pan out to a very successful career for him. The ref finally checks the arm of The Rock and he comes back to life at two and a half.  He escapes the hold with some right hands and this leads to a low blow on Lesnar. The ref misses this though because he is distracted by Heyman’s shenanigans. Lesnar lands a big shoulder into the midsection of The Rock, who is in the corner. When Lesnar tries for another one Rocky explodes out of the corner and levels Lesnar with a clothesline. The Rock “lays the smackdown” next and the finally slap sends Lesnar over the top rope. The Rock is quick to join him on the outside and start to dismantle the time keepers table. Heyman comes over to stop him and The Rock shoots him an awesome look here. The Rock bangs Heyman’s face off the table and then levels Brock with another clothesline. The next spot is great. The Rock shines the ring post up before he catapults Lesnar into it. His attention returns to Heyman and he soon gets a Rock Bottom through the table. The Rock returns Lesnar to the ring and the crowd is really giving him some heat here. And The Rock is giving it right back. There was a point about halfway through when The Rock just embraced the fan’s heat and turned Heel.

The Rock is waiting for Lesnar to rise to his feet so that he can give him a Rock Bottom too. It’s not long after that he catches one and The Rock goes for the cover. The crowd counts along but Lesnar gets the shoulder up at two. And the “lets go Lesnar” chant begin as The Rock sits and ponders as how Lesnar was able to kick-out. Good stuff here by The Rock. While he is distracted talking to himself, Lesnar jumps to his feet and gives Rock his own finisher, The Rock Bottom. This sends the crowd into a frenzy as both men lay on the mat. Brock finally crawls to make the cover but the delay allow The Rock to kick out. They both return to their feet but Rock gets the edge by nailing a spinebuster. The People’s Elbow is next but on the second bounce off the ropes Lesnar hopes to his feet and turns The Rock into gravel with a clothesline. Lesnar soon hits the F5 and place explodes and Brock Lesnar pins The Rock clean to become the new WWE Universal Champion. This is a finish that The Rock wanted and was against the original plan, which was some kind of Heyman Shenanigan. The Rock wanted the clean win so he could help to put Lesnar over in proper fashion. Overall the match was great but may have been a little over shadowed by the match it follows. This really is a historic win for Lesnar though as it would make him the youngest Champion ever at the time. Randy Orton would later beat this accomplishment though. Take the time to watch this match as it is great stuff. Match Time:15:50

I can’t emphasis enough that if you are a fan of wrestling you need to watch this whole show. From the moment the first bell sounds it is non-stop action throughout. As I do at the end of all these Chairshot Classics, I like to see what Dave Meltzer thought of the card by looking at his star ratings. I gather these from www.profightdb.com. Only two matches received under a three and they were Jericho/Flair and Taker/Test. Only one broke a four, Triple H/Shawn Michaels, and it received a 4.25. The rest of the card had some threes that varied up and down the number. Overall, I would have to say Dave thought it was a success.

Well that is it for this edition of The Chairshot Classic and I hope you enjoyed it as a lot of time and digging goes into these articles. So do The Chairshot and I a favor and tell your friends about us. I can be found on Twitter @james_callear and you can find The Chairshot here.

Attitude of Aggression

The Attitude Of Aggression returns for another installment of The Big Four Project, a chronological analysis, review, and discussion about WWE’s Big Four PPVs/ Premium Live Events. On this Episode, the guys cover WrestleMania VIII. The era of Hulkamania was drawing to a close and this particular WrestleMania, to a large degree, dealt with that. This epic event at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis in the spring of 1992 saw two unforgettable classic championship matches as Bret “Hitman” Hart sought to recapture the IC title from Rowdy Roddy Piper and “Macho Man” Randy Savage sought to reclaim the WWE Championship from “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Add in Hulk Hogan’s last match in WWE for roughly 10 months, and the unforgettable return of The Ultimate Warrior, and this Mania was one for the ages, even if much of the undercard was underwhelming. Join us here for all that and much more on another epic installment of The Big Four Project!
