With multiple rumors of late that the WWE has been offering contracts to independent stars from the United Kingdom (check that out here), as well as reportedly going after talents already under contract to MLW (you can find that story here), a story has broke now that a current PROGRESS Wrestling titleholder has signed a deal.
According to F4WOnline, PROGRESS Women’s Champion Jinny Couture has signed a WWE United Kingdom contract. It was reported last week that NXT Superstar Steffanie Newell would be challenging Jinny for the title on June 10th (that report can be read here), also coming after it was rumored that PROGRESS, along with Insane Championship Wrestling, could be bringing content to the WWE Network (check that out here).
Jinny, the leader of The House Of Couture in PROGRESS, is a four-year pro from London, England and has previously competed for WWE, albeit during WrestleMania 33 Axxess last year in a loss to Toni Storm, who also has reportedly signed with WWE. Through her short career, Jinny has also competed for Pro Wrestling Chaos, Wrestling League and Revolution Pro Wrestling where she was the promotions first Women’s Champion, a title she recently lost that’s being seen as an indication of a WWE deal.
EA’s Take: I’d tend to believe this and if in fact it is true, I wonder if the announcement regarding the UK Division Triple H promised for the upcoming UK Title Tournament will be some sort of weekly show, whether it’s locally in the UK, on WWE Network or both. Does anyone find it a little odd that WWE would be signing a female for a division that’s completely comprised of men? A UK Women’s Division is my early assumption unless she’d be used strictly in a valet/managerial role to start.
