Chairshot Classics: WCW SuperBrawl – Return From The Rising Sun (1991)

In The Arena: Tony Schiavone & Missy Hyatt are standing by with ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk. Zenk tore his bicep but he was happy to be there and say hi to the fans. Schiavone congratulates a contest winner and lets people know that 60% of fans called into the hotline and wanted to see Hyatt attempt another interview in the men’s locker room. A video is played showing her attempt to do so at WrestleWar.

Match #3: ‘Wildfire’ Tommy Rich vs. Nikita Koloff
Side headlock by Rich. He ducks a clothesline and hits a cross body right off the bat. Koloff kicks out at 1. Collar and elbow and Rich is shoved to the corner. Forearms by Nikita followed by an Irish Whip. Rich moves away from the corner splash and catches Koloff with a cradle roll up. Another collar and elbow, side headlock by Rich. Koloff tries to free himself and pulls his opponent to the corner by his hair. The referee lectures Koloff and Rich goes on offense. A series of Irish whips, Koloff moves away from a 2nd attempted elbow and hits the turnbuckle. Scoop slam by Koloff, followed by forearms to the back.

Nikita is pulled away in the corner, when he pursues Rich he receives a kick to the midsection but it doesn’t slow him down. Shoulders to the abdomen by Koloff, snapmare take down and a standing elbow drop. A lateral press gets a 2 count. Rich fights back with a right and an uppercut. He stands on the 2nd turnbuckle and delivers rights. Koloff reverses the Irish whip, Rich tries a comeback crossbody but no one is home. Koloff hits the Russian Sickle and picks up the W.
Winner: Nikita Koloff (Russian Sickle)

  • EA’s Take: I love the play on Dusty Rhodes with Koloff’s nickname, ‘The Russian Nightmare’. I assume this is a buildup match to an eventual encounter with WCW United States Champion Lex Luger, so Nikita certainly dominated the match, as he should have for stoyline purposes. Three matches in and they’ve all been won by the heels.

In The Arena: Tony Schiavone is standing by and introduces Johnny B. Badd, joined by Theodore R. Long. The Flamboyant Badd dances his way down the aisle. Long is here to make sure Ron Simmons is defeated and to introduce his new client. Long says he has the fastest hands in pro wrestling and he’s the only real man in the company.

Match #4: Terrance Taylor w/Alexandra York & Mr. Hughes vs. ‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes
Taylor immediately consults with York, and then they lock up. Rhodes shoves Taylor off. They circle and tie up once again. A waistlock takedown by Taylor is quickly broken. Taylor checks in with York once again. Collar and elbow, football tackle by Rhodes for a one count. Taylor rolls out and checks the computer. Back in, there is a shoving match and the two posture. Another tie up, Rhodes is sent for the ride and receives a hiptoss. He comes back with an arm drag/armbar combo. Rhodes blocks a left, and once again Taylor checks with his manager. Taylor’s hammerlock is broken by an elbow from Rhodes. Collar and elbow and they exchange rights. Rhodes gets the upperhand and delivers a hip toss.

He attempts a bionic elbow, Taylor jumps at him with a sloppy crossbody that’s reverses into a headlock by The Natural. Back to their feet, Taylor lifts Rhodes for a scoop slam. He misses the elbow and Rhodes executes another arm drag/armbar combo. Taylor gets his foot on the ropes and the hold is broken. He rolls outside to York again. Back in the ring there is a collar and elbow. Knee to the gut from Taylor. Rhodes blocks a vertical suplex and delivers one of his own, followed by a two count. Shoulder block by Dustin, they run the ropes, he attempts a crossbody but Taylor moves. He rolls out to the entrance ramp and Taylor takes liberties on the outside. He snaps Rhodes’ neck across the top rope, and waits for the referee’s count.

Rhodes is suplexed back into the ring and Taylor drops a knee. Rhodes kicks out at 2. Rhodes tries to fight back, but is lifted with a scoop slam. Taylor leaps off the 2nd turnbuckle but runs into Rhodes’ boots. A series of rights and a backbody drop from Rhodes. Huge clothesline flips Taylor over, he’s sent again and is hit with an atomic drop. Taylor breaks the pin with his leg on the rope. Rhodes picks him back up and delivers a bulldog, but the referee is distracted by York who is up on the apron. Rhodes gets the referees attention and Taylor cheap shots him from behind. They run the ropes and Rhodes hits a shoulder tackle.

He runs again but this time Hughes is on the apron and and grabs him. Nick Patrick is still distracted by York. Taylor comes over to take advantage with a right. Taylor holds Rhodes for Hughes to strike him with a foreign object. Rhodes ducks and Taylor is clocked. He knocks Hughes off the apron and gets the 1-2-3.
Winner: ‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes (Foreign Object)

  • EA’s Take: They’ve certainly built up the second generation star in the making, as apparently Rhodes is still undefeated up to this point. Interesting that the last two heels won clean with their finisher and the babyface won due to a foreign object. At least York is hot, because this computer gimmick is insufferable. I wonder if somewhere in the WCW tape library if you can actually see the moment Dustin fell for her…
