Chairshot Classics: WWE SummerSlam 2014

After this we are introduced to the challenger in this match for the WWE Diva’s Championship. Page is mimicking her opponent, AJ Lee, as she skips to the ring in a similar fashion. This is a feud that started when Page tried to congratulate Lee for being the longest reigning Diva’s Champ. Lee instead would slap and belittle her. Page would then beat Lee for the Strap in her in-ring debut and become the youngest Champion in Diva’s history. AJ Lee would invoke her rematch clause 48 days later on RAW and win her Title back. The Champion skips to the ring next and has her little celebration. When the bell sounds Page offers up a handshake to the Champion. Lee accepts the offer but quickly pulls the hand in and begins to bite it. She then pulls Page’s hair and has a sadistic smile when Page rolls from the ring to recover. Lee joins her out there and bounces Page’s face off the announce table and ring apron before she returns her to the ring. Page is able to sweep the leg, but she soon finds herself on the outside after a big boot from Lee. When she tries for a flying knee from the apron, Page is able to catch her in the electric chair position. She then drops Lee, face first, onto the security barrier. Page then skips around the ring before re-entering it. She then leaves the ring again to throw Lee back into it. Page seductively mounts the Champ and unloads some headbutts. Not very lady-like if you ask me. A headlock is next from Page and there is a weak “AJ” chant from the crowd. She escapes the hold and they soon find themselves battling on the top rope. AJ comes out ahead when she shoves Page to the floor outside. She soon jumps off and catches Page with a crossbody. It takes a moment to recover, but Lee returns Page to the ring. She hits the ropes and Lee drives her knee into the face of Page before making a cover. It is close but Page is able to kick-out. Page nails a saving grace superkick but when she picks Lee up the Champ transitions into the Black Widow. This soon backfires and Page pulls of the Ram-Page, a cradled DDT. She hooks the leg and the crowd pop as the ref counts the three. Page is the New Diva’s Champion. This is a match that showcases what direction the Women’s division is headed in. I enjoyed this match even though Page had some spots where she looked a little green still. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the watch. Match Time-4:55

We get a look at the home of next year’s SummerSlam, which is in East Rutherford, NJ. The home of the New York Giants/Jets. This is the first time that the event will take place outside the Staples Center in six years. I find it weird that they are plugging next year’s event already.

The “Flag Match” is next and this isn’t like the flag matches of old. Usually it is a capture the fag style of rules with each flag in the opposite corner. This match just has the flags there and the winner gets to wave their respective colors. Rusev is the first out and he is joined by the ravishing Lana. Rusev is getting the foreigner Heel heat here as he waves the Russian flag with pride. Once in the ring Lana takes to the mic and dedicates the show to “The World’s greatest reality star and a true hero, Vladimir Putin.” They then show Putin’s headshot on the TitanTron. She then turns on the fans and tears into them. Decent Heel work here, but nothing special. The US Color Guard of the 11th Cavalry Regiment enters and the crowd start the “USA” chants. When “The Real American” enters the crowd pops for Jack Swagger. Jack is joined by Zeb Coulter, who is waving the Red, White and Blue. Swagger sends the crowd into a frenzy when he starts to wave the flag in the center of the ring. This quickly turns to heat when Rusev attacks during this and the flag hits the mat. Rusev pounds Swagger into the corner, but Swagger shoves him off and hits the big boot. Swagger then puts the Ankle Lock on, but the ref breaks the hold because the bell hasn’t even sounded yet. The two separate and the crowd start the “USA” chants again. Lana and Rusev plea that his ankle is now injured and the match cant begin. The ref signals for the bell anyway and Swagger attacks Rusev in the corner. After some knee strikes Swagger targets the ankle. The hobbled Rusev leaves the ring but Swagger is right there to throw him back into it.  When Rusev tries this a third time Swagger meets him outside with a clothesline. When Swagger returns him to the ring this time he tries for a Swagger Bomb. This is reversed when Rusev gets the knees up. Rusev goes on the offensive now with knee strikes but is still hopping on one foot. After some stomps, Rusev puts Swagger into a waistlock. Swagger lands some elbows to the side of Rusev’s head and tries for a bell-to-belly. He doesn’t have the strength and Rusev kicks him to the canvas.

Rusev takes some time to get the crowd fired up and this leads to a belly-to-belly toss from Swagger out of nowhere. A clothesline is followed by a big boot from Swagger and he takes a moment to get the crowd fired up. He places his hand on his heart and the crowd chants a “We The People” before a Swagger Bomb is delivered. He’s slow to hook the leg and Rusev kicks out. After a quick back and forth of reversals Swagger hits a big slam. They both stagger to their feet and Rusev strikes first with a kick to the ribs. A superkick follows and Rusev is looking for the Accolade. After some struggle due to his injured ankle he gets it locked in. Swagger is able to roll it over and pick the ankle. He applies the Ankle Lock but after some struggle Rusev is able to turn it over. Rusev fights his way free and takes Swagger off his feet with a high leaping spinning heal kick. This time when Rusev puts the Accolade on, Swagger can’t escape. He doesn’t tap out, but instead passes out and the ref is forced to ring the bell. After the match Zeb is checking on Swagger and Rusev attacks him. This really gets some heat for Rusev. The Russian Anthem then plays and the Russian flag is lowered from the ceiling as the two celebrate in the ring. What a swerve right? Nobody thought Rusev stood a chance here, but too bad the match wasn’t better. This is a pass for me and should be for you as well. Match Time-9:01

Attitude of Aggression

The Attitude Of Aggression returns for another installment of The Big Four Project, a chronological analysis, review, and discussion about WWE’s Big Four PPVs/ Premium Live Events. On this Episode, the guys cover Survivor Series ’92, an event that saw a radical departure from Survivor Series events of the past. With many top stars having departed the WWE in the Fall of 1992 (or having been fired), the 1992 edition of Survivor Series saw only one traditional Survivor Series match. But it did feature some firsts, such as the first ever televised Coffin Match in PPV history, the first time Mr. Perfect would wrestle a match since Summer Slam ’91, the PPV debuts of Razor Ramon and Yokozuna, and the first of three truly notable battles between Bret “Hitman” Hart and Shawn Michaels. Their match at Survivor Series ’92 was an instant classic and it was so good, that the guys decided to do a watch along here on this Episode! All that plus behind-the-scenes stories and lesser-known factoids the Big Four Project famously delivers time and time again. Join us here for all that and much more on another epic installment of The Big Four Project!

The Attitude Of Aggression returns for another installment of The Big Four Project, a chronological analysis, review, and discussion about WWE’s Big Four PPVs/ Premium Live Events. On this Episode, the guys cover Summer Slam ’92, the first truly massive overseas PPV for the WWE. In the summer of 1992, the WWE traveled to Wembley Stadium in England and delivered an unforgettable event. Headlined by two epic matches, this was the event that truly made Summer Slam feel more like WrestleMania than ever before. One of the Main Events saw the Macho Man, Randy Savage, defend the WWE Championship against the man who had retired him a year earlier, The Ultimate Warrior. The other Main Event saw Bret “Hitman” Hart defend his IC Championship against hometown hero, The British Bulldog. It ended up being one of the greatest IC title matches in history and here, on this Episode, the guys do a watch-along of that phenomenal battle. All that plus behind-the-scenes stories and lesser-known factoids the Big Four Project famously delivers time and time again.
