Chairshot Classics: WWE SummerSlam 2014

Published

on

When the match is over we see a view of the LA Skyline before the package for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match. This is all Paul Heyman highlighting Brock Lesnar’s return around the previous years SummerSlam. Lesnar has been on a tear since then, breaking the arms of both Shawn Michaels and Triple H, “Punking” out Mark Henry and ending The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak. Up next is John Cena and him winning the vacated Title at Money in the Bank. This is a role that allegedly Daniel Bryan was meant to play but due to his, what was thought to be, career ending injury Cena was thrust into this role. Decent video here but I’ve definitely seen better. The crowd pop when “The Beast and Paul Heyman make their way out and into the ring. Lesnar even gets some corner pyro when he is in the ring. This is something you don’t usually see if the competitors name isn’t Kane. The crowd are booing before Cena even enters but this is overshadowed by pop when he actually enters John Cena is carrying both Straps and this is the last time the Champ would carry both. The Unified Title would be debuted on the following nights RAW and would also have the current WWE logo on it. The ring announcer, Justin Roberts reintroduces the competitors and both receive a mixed reaction from the fans. This is an annoying trend that still exist today.

When the bell sounds Cena is quick to tackle Lesnar into the corner and unload some punches. Lesnar is able to wrestle him to the ground though and deliver some punches of his own. Lesnar scoops Cena up and the first F5 off the match comes early. Lesnar then hooks the leg and the crowd is buzzing but Cena is able to kick-out. Brock then stomps on Cena while saying “Think about it John. I’m going to kill you.” A German suplex is next from Lesnar and after doing so he paces around the limp body of John Cena. The building is electric at this point and the crowd are at war with “Lets Go__” chants. Another German suplex and more pacing from Lesnar. Incase you don’t know there is a lot of this within this match so brace yourself. After a big knee to the midsection of Cena,  we see a snap suplex this time from Lesnar. Cena tries to go on the offensive by tackling Lesnar into the corner but this doesn’t work and he is soon driven back to the canvas with more knees from Lesnar. Lesnar works a side headlock and when Cena stands it up Lesnar drives him right back to the mat with a clothesline. After another rally attempt by Cena is squashed Lesnar hits a German suplex and for those counting at home that’s four suplexs so far. Four more follow this one and that puts us up to eight suplexs in total thus far.

After some more pacing from The Beast he attempts to cover Cena. It is a lazy cover and this allows Cena to get a shoulder up. After another German suplex the referee takes a moment to see if John Cena wants to continue. When Cena wants to continue Lesnar rewards him with another German Suplex. This brings the suplex count into double digits. The crowd start to buzz again when Cena escapes suplex eleven with some elbows to the side of Lesnar’s head. He hits the ropes and dazes Lesnar with a pair of running forearms. When he tries for a third Lesnar scoops him up for a F5. The crowd explode when Cena escapes this and gives Lesnar an Attitude Adjustment. He hooks the leg of Brock but he narrowly kicks out. This leaves both men prone for a moment but Lesnar sits up like The Undertaker and starts to laugh maniacally. Lesnar is now bouncing in the center of the ring and challenging Cena to join him. Cena charges but Lesnar tackles him to the canvas. Brock then mounts the Champ and unloads about thirty punches onto him. The Three Amigos is next but Lesnar does it one better and holds on for a fourth German suplex at the end. That’s now fourteen suplexs in total, thirteen of which were Germans. That isn’t all though and we see another Three Amigos from Lesnar. Seventeen now. Out of nowhere Cena drop toe holds Lesnar and applies the STF. It doesn’t take Lesnar long to escape this and unload some more punches on Cena. This leads to our second F5 and another cover from The Beast. And after sixteen German suplexs and a pair of F5s Cena isn’t able to kick-out. The top comes off the building as the ref counts the three and Brock Lesnar is the new World Champion. This is a great match for what it was. The story that they wanted to tell was told. It definitely isn’t the best Main Event in SummerSlam history but it wasn’t terrible either. The worst part of it is that this would become the wrestling style of Lesnar we would have to grow use to. Match Time-16:05

Well that does it for this edition of the Chairshot Classic and lets wrap it up in our usual way. I would have to say my three must watch matches are- Ziggler/Miz, Orton/Reigns and the Main Event. This was a SummerSlam that I didn’t love but as always lets see what Dave Meltzer thought of it. These star ratings are acquired via www.profightdb.com Dave has the Main Event at 4.5 stars and I must disagree with this. Roman/Orton received four and that is more fair of an assessment. The Lumberjack Match is next with 3.75 and the Flag match is next with 3.25. Both Women’s match received the lowest rating with 2.5.

As always head over to Twitter and give me(@james_callear) and The Chairshot a follow. A lot of hard work goes into this content so share it amongst your friends and help us out. If you are into Professional Wrestling and don’t follow them, you are just plain doing something wrong

The other Main Event saw Bret “Hitman” Hart defend his IC Championship against hometown hero, The British Bulldog. It ended up being one of the greatest IC title matches in history and here, on this Episode, the guys do a watch-along of that phenomenal battle. All that plus behind-the-scenes stories and lesser-known factoids the Big Four Project famously delivers time and time again. Attitude of Aggression

The Attitude Of Aggression returns for another installment of The Big Four Project, a chronological analysis, review, and discussion about WWE’s Big Four PPVs/ Premium Live Events. On this Episode, the guys cover WrestleMania VIII. The era of Hulkamania was drawing to a close and this particular WrestleMania, to a large degree, dealt with that. This epic event at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis in the spring of 1992 saw two unforgettable classic championship matches as Bret “Hitman” Hart sought to recapture the IC title from Rowdy Roddy Piper and “Macho Man” Randy Savage sought to reclaim the WWE Championship from “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Add in Hulk Hogan’s last match in WWE for roughly 10 months, and the unforgettable return of The Ultimate Warrior, and this Mania was one for the ages, even if much of the undercard was underwhelming. Join us here for all that and much more on another epic installment of The Big Four Project!
