The scheduled Hell In A Cell match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship this Sunday had a new wrinkle added this week, as WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley returned to RAW and announced he would be the special referee.
‘The Hardcore Legend’ was the original RAW General Manager before being fired by Stephanie McMahon in the early part of 2017, but had not been seen again until this past Monday. While appearing on Sirius XM’s Busted Open Radio this week, revealing how his role came about and who had the idea:
“I think that having Superstars return is a good thing in doses and in this case, this was well in the works before WWE came to see my special. It was in the works actually before…I was gonna say before the tour was announced, but that’s not quite true. But, I had the chance to participate in the 25th Anniversary of RAW and I texted Mr. McMahon and I said, ‘I appreciate it, but I just feel like I have something to offer if you’re willing to wait until September. I feel like I could do something more impactful for the 20th anniversary of Hell In A Cell’. So this is a case where I have a definite role, it’s not just a matter of throwing guys out there…which we do. We as in, meaning WWE has done in the past. I think the use of Shawn and Taker…Triple H…of course they have the huge match coming up in Australia. So there’s a legit reason for them to be out there.”
