John Cena Reportedly Still Out Of Crown Jewel, WWE Comments

WrestleMania 34 John Cena The Undertaker

After today’s statement by WWE that in their Third Quarter Financial Report that the company is still going to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia next Friday for their Crown Jewel event (check that out here), there’s still the looming reports that WWE Superstars John Cena and Daniel Bryan have refused to make the trip (see the original story here).

According to multiple reports, the WWE creative team was informed on Monday that Cena needed to be replaced (find that here), as he is scheduled to take part in the World Cup tournament at Crown Jewel. Meanwhile, Bryan is set to challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship.

In an update to the story, Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports (who broke the original story) is reporting that Cena is still currently off of the show:

In Fox’s tweet he mentions a report by Post Wrestling’s John Pollock, who also adds that there is already a replacement for Cena in mind, but currently no information on who that is.

Additionally, it’s being speculated that the company could run some kind of an angle this coming Monday on RAW to explain why Cena is being replaced in the World Cup. At the same time, there’s belief that it’s not out of the question for WWE to simply replace Cena and not address why. Of course, both are pure speculation at this point.

Now a number of outlets have attempted to get a comment on this story from WWE, Pro Wrestling Sheet was successful. Although, the company merely issued a reiteration of the same statement they previously put out when reports of Superstars not wanting to make the trip started coming out:

“As always, we maintain an open line of communication with our performers and will address each situation accordingly.”

EA’s Take: I think WWE needs to do whatever the hell they can to get Cena and Bryan to appear. If you run an angle to explain either of them not being there, people are going to crap all over it now that this has all gotten out, but it’s still a no win situation. To be quite honest, I don’t really care who WWE does business with because I don’t try to hold companies up to some standard of excellence like they’re not above the mighty dollar. However after all of this, even I think they need to look into any way they can to get out of this deal once Crown Jewel is over. Not sure that will happen though due to the McMahons’ relationship with the leader of this country.

What a start to the tournament!

Did your picks win points?

The AEW Continental Classic is underway, with almost everyone competing. Check in here if you haven’t seen the winners and losers of week 1!

Here are your Gold League standings!

  • Jon Moxley: 1-0, 3 points
  • Swerve Strickland: 1-0, 3 points
  • Jay White: 1-0, 3 points
  • Rush: 0-1, 0 points
  • Mark Briscoe: 0-1, 0 points.
  • Jay Lethal: 0-1, 0 points

Here are your Blue League standings!

  • Brody King: 1-0, 3 points
  • Claudio Castagnoli: 1-0, 3 points
  • Daniel Garcia: 0-1, 0 points
  • Eddie Kingston: 0-1, 0 points
  • Bryan Danielson: Yet to Compete
  • Andrade El Idolo: Yet to Compete

My Thoughts:

Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild, this tournament only just got started. The only disappointing point is that they could not get Bryan “cleared to compete” Saturday night. Not sure how much of that is shoot given the bad eye, but this was kinda the problem of wanting him in the tournament over tons of other choices. Bryan wants to face Okada for WrestleKingdom 18, how is Bryan supposed to do that at his best if he’s also gonna be in a round robin, doing five top level matches in about as many weeks? And it takes away from Andrade being able to do something. Also a little surprised we didn’t even hear from Andrade on Saturday.

Now as we heard on Saturday, round two’s matches are set. Gold League will see Mark Briscoe VS Rush, White VS Swerve, and of course, Moxley VS Lethal. Nice variety there, a couple 0-1 guys facing off, as well as two 1-0 guys, and then 1-0 VS 0-1. No offense to Lethal, but he feels like an 0-2 going up against Moxley. Hard to call the other ones but that’s the fun of it. Meanwhile, Blue League sees Brody VS Claudio in a showdown to be 2-0, then Bryan and Andrade finally jump in, Bryan against Eddie and Andrade against Garcia. Sadly, feels like Eddie and Garcia are going 0-2, no way Tony Khan is booking Bryan and Andrade to lose their first shots.

In fact, that could be half the reason they did wait on those two, that’s almost too good for just a first round opener. But I still would’ve done it, same as NJPW does stuff like that for round robins, which this is all modeled after anyway.
