In keeping up with the recent events surrounding the possible murder of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, a United States resident who is believed to have been killed by the Saudi Arabian government (check out the story here), the pressure on the WWE due to their relationship with Saudi Arabia looks like it will continue to mount.
IJR.com has an article up today with quotes from multiple United States Senators urging that the WWE’s upcoming Crown Jewel pay-per-view, scheduled for November 2nd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, be either postponed or cancelled altogether. While WWE has said they are monitoring the situation, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham (who has been one of the more outspoken Senators following news of Khashoggi’s disappearance) tells IJR, “There should be a pause…I want a complete rethinking of our relationship [with Saudi Arabia]”.
Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, the home state of WWE Headquarters, stated with regards to Crown Jewel, “I’d hope that they would be rethinking their relationship with the Kingdom, especially with respect to events coming up in the next weeks like [WWE Crown Jewel]”. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware also believes WWE “should be taking a hard look” due to recent events.
To add even further to the pressure, Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey believes that because of Linda McMahon’s position in President Donald Trump’s cabinet, the Commander In Chief should personally ask the WWE to stop any dealing with Saudi Arabia:
“Private enterprise is private enterprise, different than a governmental entity, but because [Linda McMahon] is part of the president’s cabinet, it falls into the grey area where the administration really should give it some thought and maybe even prevail upon them not doing it.”
The Chairshot will continue to provide any information pertaining to the status of the WWE Crown Jewel event as it becomes available.
