Now that WWE has addressed the issue of both John Cena and Daniel Bryan refusing to work tomorrow’s Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia, all the matches are finalized and no changes to the card are expected.
Meanwhile, we know that Cena’s reasons for pulling out of the show revolved around public perception and his movie career, however we don’t really know Bryan’s outside of most fans assuming it was the morality of the situation. There have been those who believed his refusal could be due to the female Superstars not participating, however he competed at the Greatest Royal Rumble in April and seems very unlikely that’s the case.
In the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explains that Bryan had gone into the Greatest Royal Rumble without much knowledge on the country’s culture or restrictions and after working the show, didn’t feel like he could work there again. However, the decision was not specifically driven by the female Superstars being excluded, but Sami Zayn not being allowed to work the show because of his Syrian descent, which Bryan found to be racist.
Additionally, Bryan also learned about Saudi Arabia’s treatment of homosexuals which also became an issue for him. Meltzer also notes that Daniel actually did not want to go over in his number one contender’s match against The Miz at Super Show-Down last month, but did not specify if that was because the winner would be scheduled for Crown Jewel.
