ROH News: Kelly Klein Set To Defend WOH Title At Honor Reigns Supreme

The WOH World Women’s Title will be defended at Honor Reigns Supreme!

Ring Of Honor may be finished up inside the squared circle in 2018, but that doesn’t mean there are not events coming up as the promotion looks ahead to January 13th’s Honor Reigns Supreme from Concord, North Carolina.

Already announced for the event is a big ROH World Title contest as Dalton Castle looks to regain the championship when he takes on Jay Lethal (see more on that here). Plus, yesterday it was revealed that Luchasaurus, Delirious and Shane ‘Hurricane’ Helms could earn a shot at the ROH World Six-Man Titles when they face the titleholders, The Kingdom, in a Proving Ground Match (read more here).

Now, another championship will be on the line as ROH has officially added a WOH World Women’s Title bout that will see the new champ Kelly Klein defending against Jenny Rose:

The Best Wrestling on the Planet returns to Concord, N.C., on Sunday, Jan. 13 for Honor Reigns Supreme at Cabarrus Arena. The top stars in Ring of Honor will do battle on a can’t-miss show that will be streamed live worldwide for HonorClub.

All roads lead to the G1 Supercard, co-promoted by ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, at sold-out Madison Square Garden on April 6, 2019, and the happenings in Concord undoubtedly will have an impact on the historic show.

In 2018, Honor Nation saw the Women of Honor crown their very first World Champion Sumie Sakai and at Final Battle, “The Gatekeeper” Kelly Klein ended her reign in dominant fashion, pinning Karen Q., Madison Rayne, and Sumie Sakai to become Champion! At the most recent ROH International Television Taping in Philadelphia, Kelly stated that any match she has as World Champion will be for the title! And in Concord, she faces one of her fiercest rivals!

WOMEN OF HONOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
WOMEN OF HONOR WORLD CHAMPION “THE GATEKEEPER” KELLY KLEIN vs. JENNY ROSE

Jenny Rose got under Kelly Klein’s skin, chipping Kelly’s teeth, surprising her in Japan, and pinning her in a six-woman tag in Philadelphia earlier this year! Kelly took the fight to Jenny and pinned her on ROH Television from Pittsburgh to earn her spot in the Final Battle Four Corner Survival bout, the match where “The Gatekeeper” picked up the victory.

Jenny wants one last shot at Kelly and she will get it in Concord! Due to Kelly’s proclamation, the World Championship will be on the line! With bad blood still boiling, can Jenny use this to pick up the title or will Kelly continue to demonstrate her reclaimed dominance and defeat Jenny once and for all? Join us in Concord or watch live on HonorClub to find out!

What a start to the tournament!

Did your picks win points?

The AEW Continental Classic is underway, with almost everyone competing. Check in here if you haven’t seen the winners and losers of week 1!

Here are your Gold League standings!

  • Jon Moxley: 1-0, 3 points
  • Swerve Strickland: 1-0, 3 points
  • Jay White: 1-0, 3 points
  • Rush: 0-1, 0 points
  • Mark Briscoe: 0-1, 0 points.
  • Jay Lethal: 0-1, 0 points

Here are your Blue League standings!

  • Brody King: 1-0, 3 points
  • Claudio Castagnoli: 1-0, 3 points
  • Daniel Garcia: 0-1, 0 points
  • Eddie Kingston: 0-1, 0 points
  • Bryan Danielson: Yet to Compete
  • Andrade El Idolo: Yet to Compete

My Thoughts:

Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild, this tournament only just got started. The only disappointing point is that they could not get Bryan “cleared to compete” Saturday night. Not sure how much of that is shoot given the bad eye, but this was kinda the problem of wanting him in the tournament over tons of other choices. Bryan wants to face Okada for WrestleKingdom 18, how is Bryan supposed to do that at his best if he’s also gonna be in a round robin, doing five top level matches in about as many weeks? And it takes away from Andrade being able to do something. Also a little surprised we didn’t even hear from Andrade on Saturday.

Now as we heard on Saturday, round two’s matches are set. Gold League will see Mark Briscoe VS Rush, White VS Swerve, and of course, Moxley VS Lethal. Nice variety there, a couple 0-1 guys facing off, as well as two 1-0 guys, and then 1-0 VS 0-1. No offense to Lethal, but he feels like an 0-2 going up against Moxley. Hard to call the other ones but that’s the fun of it. Meanwhile, Blue League sees Brody VS Claudio in a showdown to be 2-0, then Bryan and Andrade finally jump in, Bryan against Eddie and Andrade against Garcia. Sadly, feels like Eddie and Garcia are going 0-2, no way Tony Khan is booking Bryan and Andrade to lose their first shots.

In fact, that could be half the reason they did wait on those two, that’s almost too good for just a first round opener. But I still would’ve done it, same as NJPW does stuff like that for round robins, which this is all modeled after anyway.

Eddie Kingston also joined the selection special as his “life’s work” is on the line in this tournament, both the ROH World Championship and NJPW Strong Openweight Championship on the line as part of the modern day North American Triple Crown Eddie, Tony Khan, AEW, ROH and NJPW are looking to create together. Gold League competes tonight on Dynamite while Blue League will have their start this Saturday on Collision.
