Joe’s Lucha Libre Weekly: News & Analysis (1/4/2019)

CMLL
Christmas Show
The main event of this show saw Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia, and Gran Guerrero beating Caristico, Dragon Lee, and El Valiente. The story of this match was Caristico being frustrated and challenging Ultimo Guerrero after the match. That match was set up for the New Years show. Which happened already, but I haven’t watched yet because I’ve been busy. The co-main event saw the Atlantis family of Blue Panther Jr and Black Panther facing Villano IV, Hijo del Villano III, and Mephisto. Hijo did not look good in this match at all but his team won, which looked to be setting up a feud with him and Atlantis. Maybe a last ride for Villano IV. Maybe a mask vs mask match during their big March show?
Friday Show
Pentagon Jr or Penta 0m as he’s called in CMLL faced Caristico. It was a very good match and the finish was set up nicely. Pentagon won a fall by removing his mask and throwing it at Caristico when the ref wasn’t looking and that got Caristico DQ’d. For the final fall, while Penta had Caristico on the ropes, he did the same thing to Pentagon to win the match. It was set up very well. Some people might not like the finish but it was at least performed well. Mistico, Dragon Lee, and Volador Jr faced Sanson, Cuatrero, and Forastero. The former team won. It was a very nice match. I’m curious to see the attendance numbers for this show.
Next Friday Show
I haven’t watched the New Years show yet because I’ve been busy but the line up for the Friday show, which might be over or starting whenever this gets posted is, Sanson, Cuatrero, and Forastero defend their 6 man tag titles against Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja, and Soberano. The co-main event features Dragon Lee facing Cavernario in a normal singles match. Rush, Terrible, and Bestia face Atlantis, Kraneo, and Volcano. Titan also faces Triton in a singles match. So we have an interesting show.
Of course we have the FantasticaMania shows which I will be doing because well…I watch them.
AAA
AAA on Twitch, Christmas Day
This was billed as a AAA vs Elite show. Elite is a dead promotion that AAA revived just to do invasion angles. Even though some guys in Elite work AAA normally as baby faces. Anyway, the main event saw La Parka, Pagano, and Psycho Clown facing Electroshock, Taurus, and Rey Escorpion. The former won, sending the fans home happy for once. AAA like WWE rarely sends people home happy. The co-main event saw the OGTs, Averno, Super Fly, and Chessman facing Australian Suicide, Jack Evans, and Golden Magic. It was a really fun match with a ton of high spots and it saw Averno, Super Fly, and Chessman winning. Villano III’s other son was on this show, and he was a lot better than Hijo del Villano III. Villano III Jr that is. Nothing else important really happened. I’m also not sure when their next show is as they have posted a poster. I know they have a show on the 19th but it hasn’t said if it is televised.
Here & There
Fenix is finally back and I do know he worked CMLL’s New Years show. He’s scheduled to work Impact’s PPV and hopefully more. Also we see there was a bidding war over Bandido and with All Elite being official they’re going to be going after more talent. I think the upcoming landscape will tell a lot because I think a lot of Luchadors will be used as cheaper bodies.
Konnan faced Low Ki in MLW for the world title. It was more an angle than a match but they executed it well. Konnan looked slimmer and moved decent. Low Ki sold the beginning sequence of getting hit with a sock with coins very well. It was actually really impressive.
I’m unsure how many FantasticMania shows air. I’m gonna assume 4 or 5. New Japan puts three on their network and I’m sure CMLL will upload something on YouTube as they usually do.
