Chris Jericho Injured At Wrestle Kingdom?

This weekend was a huge weekend for Chris Jericho and NJPW. This weekend, the company held the Wrestle Kingdom event for the 14th year in a row. In Japan, the event is on the level of what WrestleMania is in the United States. At the event, Chris Jericho defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi. After the event, Jericho spoke with Jim Valley of the Wrestling Observer, and it appears he may be injured. Valley would state:

“Jericho came in and said that his jaw was dislocated. He also said that his knee was swollen and he’s going to get it looked at. He thought that some of the dragon screws did that, according to Jericho.”

Jason’s Take

It’s hard to say with Jericho if he is telling the truth, or is selling the effects of a hard fought match. Jericho is a master of selling.

AEW Adding Talent?

Speaking of Jim Valley and the Wrestling Observer, during this weekends edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Valley asked Dave Meltzer what wrestlers may be returning for WrestleMania. Meltzer would respond he has heard more about what potential names could be jumping to AEW more than what wrestlers will be returning for WrestleMania. Meltzer would say:

“There’s rumors about Matt Hardy. Again, his contract is up in a couple of months. I think that he’s doing Broken Matt Hardy segments so whether it’s Impact or Ring Of Honor or AEW…in that situation if you’re trying to be high profile then AEW is your best bet. I would think that he might end up there. Brodie Lee, the former Luke Harper, his deal is gonna be up in less than 3 months. The Revival, they haven’t signed [with WWE]. They’re being embarrassed. If you’re The Revival and you don’t want to stay with WWE, who do you want to feud with? The Young Bucks and The Revival have been setting up that feud with each other for years.”

Jason’s Take

Brodie Lee has been linked to AEW pretty much since the inception of the company. Many considered Lee to be underutilized in WWE. There could be potential matches with Adam Page, Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley or Chris Jericho that could be of huge interest for fans in AEW.

Matt Hardy has been very entertaining with his Broken/Woken Matt Hardy persona dating back to his time in TNA/Impact. He and his brother Jeff still have the potential to draw money as a tag team, especially in a company like AEW that has an emphasis on tag team wrestling.

WWE Female Stars Jumping Ship?

Matt Hardy and Brodie Lee aren’t the only two stars who could be potentially jumping promotions. Bushiroad director Takaaki Kidani has stated that he would like to bring Kairi Sane and Io Shirai back to the STARDOM promotion and that a good money offer would be made to them. Meltzer would state the following on Wrestling Observer Radio regarding the possible jump:

“Io may be moved to the main roster real quick to keep that from happening because then her pay goes way up because her pay in NXT is nothing special. I heard she was making more money [with STARDOM].”

Jason’s Take

Sane has been receiving a decent push as part of the Kabuki Warriors, so I don’t see the potential for a jump anytime soon. However, Shirai is engaged to NJPW star Evil, so there could be potential that she may want to jump back to STARDOM to be close to her fiance.

Mitchell’s AEW Continental Classic Update! (11/27/23)

What a start to the tournament!

Did your picks win points?

The AEW Continental Classic is underway, with almost everyone competing. Check in here if you haven’t seen the winners and losers of week 1!

Here are your Gold League standings!

  • Jon Moxley: 1-0, 3 points
  • Swerve Strickland: 1-0, 3 points
  • Jay White: 1-0, 3 points
  • Rush: 0-1, 0 points
  • Mark Briscoe: 0-1, 0 points.
  • Jay Lethal: 0-1, 0 points

Here are your Blue League standings!

  • Brody King: 1-0, 3 points
  • Claudio Castagnoli: 1-0, 3 points
  • Daniel Garcia: 0-1, 0 points
  • Eddie Kingston: 0-1, 0 points
  • Bryan Danielson: Yet to Compete
  • Andrade El Idolo: Yet to Compete

My Thoughts:

Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild, this tournament only just got started. The only disappointing point is that they could not get Bryan “cleared to compete” Saturday night. Not sure how much of that is shoot given the bad eye, but this was kinda the problem of wanting him in the tournament over tons of other choices. Bryan wants to face Okada for WrestleKingdom 18, how is Bryan supposed to do that at his best if he’s also gonna be in a round robin, doing five top level matches in about as many weeks? And it takes away from Andrade being able to do something. Also a little surprised we didn’t even hear from Andrade on Saturday.

Now as we heard on Saturday, round two’s matches are set. Gold League will see Mark Briscoe VS Rush, White VS Swerve, and of course, Moxley VS Lethal. Nice variety there, a couple 0-1 guys facing off, as well as two 1-0 guys, and then 1-0 VS 0-1. No offense to Lethal, but he feels like an 0-2 going up against Moxley. Hard to call the other ones but that’s the fun of it. Meanwhile, Blue League sees Brody VS Claudio in a showdown to be 2-0, then Bryan and Andrade finally jump in, Bryan against Eddie and Andrade against Garcia. Sadly, feels like Eddie and Garcia are going 0-2, no way Tony Khan is booking Bryan and Andrade to lose their first shots.

In fact, that could be half the reason they did wait on those two, that’s almost too good for just a first round opener. But I still would’ve done it, same as NJPW does stuff like that for round robins, which this is all modeled after anyway.
