WWE News: Japanese Star Reportedly Signing With WWE

If you remember, when Kairi Sane signed with the WWE back in 2017 after coming from the STARDOM promotion, she was not supposed to come alone. Io Shirai had also been offered a WWE deal after both received a tryout in March 2017, however there was a snag with Shirai.

Reportedly, Shirai had failed her WWE medical examination due to a neck issue, plus a rumored heart problem. WWE rescinded their contract offer and it was said by Dave Meltzer that the company had a generalized rule to not bring in talents with concussion or neck issues.

WWE could be changing their tune on that as Tokyo Sports is reporting that Shirai has informed STARDOM she will be leaving the promotion to sign with WWE. According to PWInsider, her final show for the company will be on June 17th.

EA’s Take: From what our very own Andrew Balaz tells me, this all sounds pretty legit, including the heart issue. He’s much more in-tune with the puroresu/Japan world than I am, so I always defer to him. I’m curious as to the nature of the heart issue, I can’t imagine it’s very serious or else she wouldn’t be in the ring, especially for a company like WWE. I’m not familiar with her work, so I definitely would like to see what she can do compared to Kairi Sane. I’ve had minor issues with Kairi and still see where she can improve, so I want to see how far along Shirai is.
