One of the more surprising stories this past week was the announcement that Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling will be teaming up for the G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden over WrestleMania weekend (for more on that go here). This of course came after ROH had previously been looking to hold a show reportedly around the same time at the venue, however WWE apparently stepped in to stop it as part of their decades-long relationship with MSG (check out that here).

This has made many wonder what changed to allow the ROH/NJPW event, ROH COO Joe Koff recently spoke with The New York Post on the subject:

“I think that’s a question better asked of Madison Square Garden because we were very aggressive in wanting that date and we thought we had that date, but we did what we had to do as a business. [MSG] did what they had to do as a business and I guess all of a sudden there was a phone call and we were able to work it out. … That’s probably their story to tell because they made the call [to us] and said let’s get on the phone and see if we can work this out. They wanted us. They knew that we would be good promotion. I think they were just looking for a satisfactory outcome for all parties.”

WWE has also commented on Ring Of Honor being hosted at Madison Square Garden:

“MSG is, of course, free to work with ROH [Ring of Honor] however they want.”

EA’s Take: So while we still don’t know exactly what happened, to me the signs point to Madison Square Garden finally saying that they’ve had enough waiting for WWE. They are after all the ones who have been reaching out to others. What I’m intrigued by is whether or not they can sell the place out because there’s a lot of factors to consider. There will be loads of fans in the area obviously, but it’s also the same night as NXT TakeOver. How about ticket prices? If the show’s streamed, that will increase costs and up the price to attend. Also, who’s going to be on the card? Keep in mind, this show takes place next April…after Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and Cody’s contracts all expire. If WWE is indeed going to make them all big money offers, they could all be gone by then and that would be a huge hit. Like I said, lots to consider.
