ROH News: Former WWE Backstage Producer Signs With Ring Of Honor

After it was revealed that Ring Of Honor had come to terms on a new two-year contract with Flip Gordon (read about that here), the company has now signed a former WWE Superstar, but for a backstage role.

According to PWInsider, Joey Matthews, known as Joey Mercury in WWE, has signed a contract with Ring Of Honor to work backstage as a producer, but also as a trainer for the ROH Dojo, which he has been doing since mid-May. Matthews is most known for his run in WWE with the tag team MNM, winning the WWE Tag Team Championship three times with Johnny Nitro, also known as John Morrison, Johnny Mundo and Johnny Impact.

Matthews had previously been let go from WWE, but returned in 2010 as a member of CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society, then transitioned into a trainer’s role at Florida Championship Wrestling and eventually a backstage producer. He would return to television in 2015 alongside Jamie Noble as J&J Security, doing the bidding of The Authority and often helping then-WWE Champion Seth Rollins. The duo’s final appearance would come on RAW on July 6th of that year, getting destroyed by Brock Lesnar. He would make another appearance breaking up a backstage brawl between Triple H and Roman Reigns on the March 14th, 2016 episode of RAW before being released from the company in January of 2017.
