5. Going to WCW

Hogan leaving the WWE to pursue his “Acting” career was a big deal, but it did seem like the door was open for him to return down the line. That door closed when Hogan signed a big money contract with WCW.

WCW didn’t waste any time booking the match WWE had failed to a few years prior of Hogan vs Flair. Hogan defeated Flair in the main event of Bash of the Beach 94 for the WCW World tite. Hogan coming in did big business for WCW but that didn’t last long.

The loyal WCW fans wanted the traditional wrestling they’d been used to and not Hogan’s cartoony wrestling. The boos became more noticeable and the buy rates would go decrease with each PPV. Something needed to change…

4. The Formation of the NWO

That change came two years later at Bash at the Bash when Hogan turned Heel and formed the NWO with Hall and Nash. Hogan had adamant against Eric Bischoff’s attempts to get him to turn but changed his tune when he saw the money in the outsider’s angle.

It’s not like Hogan hadn’t been heel before but the majority of fans knew him as a good guy. So when he dropped that leg on Randy Savage fans were shocked. People threw trash in the ring and one fan even tried to get in the ring.

The NWO helped rejuvenate interest in WCW  offering and element of realism the WWE wasn’t at the time but the angle would ultimately would prove to be their down fall. Sticking with what had worked before despite the angle  long running it’s course which stopped new stars being made.

3. Returning in 2002

Despite being absent from the Invasion the NWO made their way to WWE in early 2002. They were supposed to be the poison that would kill the WWE the only problem was fans were happy to see Hogan back. Being cheered at Mania 18 shockingly more than The Rock. He was so over that they had to turn him face and split him from the group which killed it before it got off the ground.

Fans were so happy to see Hogan that WWE decided to have beat Triple H for the Undisputed title giving him a month long nostalgia run with it dropping the belt to the Undertaker.
