Here and There in Lucha Libre

Interesting to note recently on Twitter Pentagon liked a post indicating that he’s going to WWE. Unsure on Fenix, but Pentagon is apparently not taking any bookings in 2019. I’m not sure about his Lucha Underground contract but if he’s signed for more seasons and they have more seasons, I don’t believe he can just go to WWE. The idea of him and Fenix in WWE is… well it’s not interesting to me. We have an elaborate history of Mexican wrestlers who don’t speak English well in WWE. And it’s never good. Essa Rios failed, Mistico clearly failed, and in my opinion from what I’ve seen Almas isn’t fairing well. WWE is a narrow minded company that has one way of doing business, and part of that business is having everyone talk and recite written lines even if they’re not good at it, and even if they can get over without it. We saw how they ruined the Japanese speakers too. Especially Asuka. If WWE is offering them big money then you can’t fault them, but if it’s typical WWE business as usual then I think we’ll see these two incredibly mishandled. The only faith that I have is that perhaps they’ll debut with Rey Mysterio right off the bat. Pentagon desperately needs his mask and look to make what he does work, and based off the glimpses i got of unmasked Fenix on the AAA and CMLL shows, he needs it too. Here’s to hoping the broken clock that is WWE is right twice a day.

Lucha Match of the Week

I think something fun would be to look at a match in Lucha Libre history and considering that Villano III just passed away I thought, looking at Villano III vs Atlantis in the mask vs mask match would be appropriate.

The crowd is just deafening before the match even starts. They’ve barely done anything for the first few minutes and this crowd is going mayhem, just utterly electric. After a dive from Villano, their heads collided and Atlantis started bleeding horribly. He’s selling this so well. Who said luchadors don’t have psychology? Imagine the fans thoughts? Thinking the match could be stopped by the doctor. About 15 minutes into the match is when Atlantis performs the first move off the top. This match has been strictly wrestling and the crowd is in a frenzy for every pin fall. Villano gets Atlantis in an abdominal stretch and the anticipation at him tapping has the fans off their feet.

As we know he doesn’t tap. Atlantis’ mask was white when we started, and now it’s red. The pinning combination counters are so smooth. Atlantis catches him in a torture rack which Villano breaks out of, but soon he catches him again and Villano can no longer take it and taps…. I knew the winner and was still on the edge of my seat. Very worthy for observer match of the year back in 2000. Villano 4 and 5 are there along with Villano III Jr as he’s known now. His father Ray Mendoza undoes his mask and his face is revealed. Women in the crowd were crying. In my opinion we don’t have anything equivalent to this in wrestling in the United States.
