There’s no denying that the WWE’s decision to keep their Crown Jewel event this Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in light of all the controversy over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is certainly becoming a divisive issue among members of the WWE Universe.

On top of that, we now know that WWE Superstars John Cena and Daniel Bryan have refused to participate, Cena being replaced on RAW last night (find that here) while a new report today is confirming that Bryan will not be attending either (see that here). Meanwhile, the company has remained quiet on the situation outside of regurgitating the same statement about keeping open communication with its Superstars (read that here) and then another about holding up their end of the contract with Saudi (check that out here).

WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon spoke with Sky News over the weekend and issued some rare comments on the company’s decision to keep Crown Jewel as is:

“Moving forward with Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia was an incredibly tough decision, given that heinous act. But, at the end of the day, it is a business decision and, like a lot of other American companies, we decided that we’re going to move forward with the event and deliver Crown Jewel for all of our fans in Saudi Arabia and around the world.”

EA’s Take: At this point, even fans are starting to turn on each other over this issue (which isn’t a surprise, really). Those on the side of “protesting” Crown Jewel already have their minds made up and those defending the company have their opinions set in stone. So this has basically become much like covering an election because this is much more politics than it is wrestling, which is why I can’t wait for it to all be over with.
