7 Days of ‘Mania: The Women Will Steal The Show
Will the women steal the show?
David Levin continues his week-long look at WrestleMania with the historic first-time women’s main event!
I don’t think I have ever been as excited for a women’s wrestling match as I am about the main event for Sunday night at WrestleMania 35 between Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair. For someone who has been a proponent of women getting their just do in the ring, similar to what TNA had done in years past, WWE has done the right thing and made the match between these wrestlers at the forefront of its marketing and packaging of the “Show of Shows.”
I was a firm believer in the feud between Flair and Sasha Banks being a cornerstone of development among the redirection and revolution of women in the company, saying goodbye to the idea of a bra and panties match or a pillow fight with scantily clad women and call it “wrasslin” for everyone to either watch in salacious banter or to run to the restroom to hit the head. Now, WWE has something to fall back on as another cornerstone moment and one we shall discuss for the next few years and beyond.
As I have said in the past Flair and Lynch is every bit Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat or Flair and Harley Race in its development. Both wrestlers need each other to push the boundaries of what wrestling is supposed to be and a storyline that should captivate us. Rousey, the current Raw Women’s Champion, has emerged from a green performer with a smile and unsure giddiness to a real badass in the ring who rightfully fills the role of heel with power and promise. It’s a shame that after her development as a star in the making, she could be leaving the company for personal reasons.
I have wondered out loud and through a computer screen how much of a hit the women’s division will take because Rousey would leave at the pinnacle of her success. WWE has used this year, so far to break barriers, to set benchmarks and to make it known these women, with others like Banks, Bayley, The Riott Squad and Many Rose and Sonya Deville are just as good as the performers of a past era. Maybe even better
These women get the moment they deserve on Sunday with a triple-threat confrontation with the biggest women’s title in the company on the line. If there is a movement to combine titles and get rid of brand extension, WWE will have once again taken a step forward in making the women of this company more important than any one male wrestler on the current roster.
It’s rightfully deserved. The wait has been long, but it has well been worth it.
