Tiffany’s Takes: WWE NXT UK (5/8/19)

NXT UK descends on Glasgow with a Tag Team main event, but who will be the last team standing?

Tiffany’s Takes digs into this week’s stellar edition of WWE NXT UK!

NXT UK Championship: The announcement of a tournament leading up to a Fatal Four Way for the #1 Contendership is a great idea and, so far, the field is a good one: Joe Coffey, Wolfie, Dave Mastiff, Ligero, Flash Morgan Webster, and Jordan Devlin, I didn’t hear who the last two were, I’m guessing a member of Mustache Mountain or Mark Andrews and either Mark Coffey or Kassius Ohno.

#1 Contender Tournament Match – Joe Coffey vs Flash Morgan Webster: I’m not sure who decided on the match pairings, but given the fact that they were in Coffey’s hometown, I knew Webster was going to get killed. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great match and Webster put up quite a fight, but Joe Coffey was too big and powerful.

I found it interesting that the Coffeys were less interested in Wolfie’s issue with Dave Mastiff than in getting the #1 Contendership. It makes me wonder if they’re building to the end of Gallus already. Speaking of Dave Mastiff, I cannot wait for his match against Wolfie! Mastiff is still undefeated in NXT UK, so it’ll be interesting if his streak will last through the tournament.

Mustache Mountain vs The Hunt: What. A. Match! When I heard the pairing, I figured this was going to be a rough ride, and it certainly was, but it was also a fantastic match! I will say that Wild Boar and Primate look like a couple of inbred, drunken, hillbillies in a bar, but they’re really good wrestlers and they gave Mustache Mountain a run for their money. The Hunt is definitely staking their claim to the Tag Division.

Women’s Division: Nina Samuels, who seems to see herself as the unrecognized star of the NXT UK Women’s Division, took on Kasey Owens in a surprisingly competitive match, that I enjoyed quite a bit. I did find it surprising that the win wasn’t more dominate on Samuels’ end if she’s being placed for a run at Toni Storm, but it was a really good match.

It looks like Toni Storms’ unintended (I assume) snub of Kay Lee Ray a few weeks ago is still eating at her (KLR), going by her promo. If Samuels isn’t ready for her closeup just yet, they’d better talk to KLR.

NXT UK Tag Team Championship Match – Grizzled Young Veterans vs Kenny Williams and Amir Jordan? (Noam Dar): This match was CRAZY! It looked like GYV was going to dodge the bullet when Amir Jordan conveniently got hurt at the start of the show, only for Kenny Williams to reveal that he had a back up plan: The returning Noam Dar, who is from Ayrshire and even more over than Gallus!

This was match of the week across WWE, in my opinion! Even knowing that GYV was unlikely to lose, it honestly looked like Williams and Dar were going to pull it out on several occasions, especially when Williams and Dar locked GYV in submission holds. I was a little disappointed that the babyfaces lost, but it was quite a return for Dar and GYV looked like legit champs after that match with a clean win.

Overall Thoughts: How was NXT UK this week? AMAZING! This was definitely an exciting hour of wrestling. I think what I, and a lot of people, like about the NXTs over the main roster is that the focus is on the wrestling and the stories tell themselves. The promos are kept to a minimum. That said, the storytelling was a little predictable, but it was still exciting. Can’t wait for next week!
