King: No WWE Championship At Hell In A Cell?

Chris King argues that WWE should have already announced Kofi Kingston’s opponent for Hell in a Cell. 

Roughly a month ago the WWE Champion Kofi Kingston was on a collision course with his decade-long rival Randy Orton for the prestigious WWE Championship on the line. Their highly-intense match would end via disqualification when Kofi beat the hell out of Orton with a kendo stick. At Clash of Champions, Kofi gained the biggest and most significant win of his title reign to date when he beat The Viper clean in the middle of the ring.

On the SmackDown Live after the pay-per-view, The New Day battled Orton and The Revival in a six-man tag team match to open the show. Following New Day’s impressive victory, The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar emerged to challenge for the WWE Title on October 4th on the FOX debut episode.

I understand that Lesnar is a Box-office attraction, but WWE should be making more of an effort to find Kofi a new number-one contender for Hell in a Cell even if Kofi’s days as champion are numbered. If you have been watching Raw over the past month, then you knew even before Clash of Champions who the next number-one contender was.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a significant amount of time spotlighting the Universal Championship match at the pay-per-view. Contrary to the WWE Championship title picture without even a match announced for a new number-one contender. This will mark the first pay-per-view since Kofi became the WWE Champion that he is not scheduled for a title defense.

There is still a week before the pay-per-view so, there’s a good chance that WWE will announce a multi-man match to find his challenger. If Lesnar is slated to win the title on the FOX debut episode, you would think WWE wouldn’t want to make it that obvious. While Raw, on the contrary, has a main-event caliber match set for Hell in a Cell, there has been no mention of who Kofi will face.

As we’ve seen in the history of WWE, even the best creative writing team can only focus on a few stories at a time which means some will be placed on the back burner. During the build for SummerSlam, it was the women’s tag team division as well as the United States Championship that took a hit. This time around it appears the WWE Championship is being overshadowed by the Universal Championship.
