Andrew’s IMPACT Results & Match Ratings: 6.16.2022

So here we are! The Go Home for Slammiversary is upon us! Anymore hype to go into Moose vs Sami? Do we find out the OG additions for the Frontline 5 Man?

We get some Knockouts Tag action, Jay & Bey take on The Briscoes and Masha Slamovich is gonna murder Alisha Edwards! There will be other things of course, but that’s all I can think of. I’m expecting some shenanigans with the X Division and Honor No More. We’ve got the second biggest show coming up, so this shouldn’t be a snooze fest.

Now we get some 2010 intro throwbacks!

Results:

Tasha Steelz & Savannah Evans vs Jordynne Grace & Mia Yim

Not really a ton to talk about here. Savannah and Mia start off, where Mia is looking superior until Heel tactics come in, some tandem moves from Tasha and Savannah, so Mia eats offense for a while. Very basic, but at least not offensive.

Mia eventually gets the hot tag into Jordynne and she starts wrecking shop. Tasha gets ragdolled, Cannonballed, and Savannah needs to break up a pinfall attempt since Tasha is just getting her lunch eaten. Some quick heavy hits where Savannah gets wiped out, Mia starts rocking Tasha, but Tasha keeps kicking out. Tasha is out numbered, getting pinballed back and forth until miscommunication comes into play. Tasha fights off a few tandem attempts and Jordynne accidentally takes Mia’s head off with a Rolling Elbow. Tasha gets the opportunistic Roll-Up and steals the win!

The miscommunication adds that expected layer of babyfaces who just want to win and helps Tasha look like she has a chance in hell. 

Garret Bischoff and Wes Briscoe are interviewed by Mean Gia Miller, before Honor No More interrupt. Kenny calls them “I’m only relevant because of my daddy club” – that’s a fire and accurate insult. D’lo breaks up the altercation in his agent suit…convenient to be with his Aces & Eights buddies and off commentary. Garret and Wes want a piece of HNM and might have just motivated D’lo to do more than corporate lobbying for a match.

Speedball Mike Bailey vs Trey Miguel

That’s gorgeous, there’s a hype video for the Heavyweight title match at Slammiversary and Trey totally gets the jobber entrance of already being in the ring. I really hope Trey plummets to the bottom of the X Division. He’s a generic Cruiserweight with mic skills worse than Helen Keller.

Typical anything you can do, I can do better kind of opening. Rolls, counters, a few quick strikes yet, no real headway made. Trey gets in a few sliding kicks, Speedball responds with kicks and they take it to the outside and things get a little dicey. Trey tries a Reverse Tiger Feint, Bailey moves, kicks him down and then goes for another Front Kick where he seems to hit the apron more than Trey.

After the commercial, Bailey is still in control of the match, limping a little, but peppering in a plethora of kicks and chops. Corkscrew Shooting Star, Double Knees Vader Bomb and a Half Crab continues all the punishment on the legs and midsection of Trey. Trey gets a laughably stupid looking burst of energy to pop back with kicks of his own and a Double Stomp, but he looks like an angry 12 year old Hulking Up. Trey floats the offense into a Dragon Sleeper, but he’s such a bad wrestler when it comes to facial emotion.

Bailey calls Trey out, gives him 3 free kicks before dropping him with one kick. Trey tries his 12 year old hulk up, but Bailey kicks him into next week. A few no sell dives, Bailey with the Escalera Moonsault, tries to keep his momentum but Trey catches him with a High Kick, then does the Delay con Hilo. More counters from the top, Bailey misses wild with the Tornado Kick, Trey tries something but Bailey counters with a sloppy Spanish Fly. Some more striking, a Tornado corner spot but Trey catches the foot and rolls through with the Single Leg Capture Cradle, and flash win for Trey.

As far as modern matches go, it was fine…no psychology, bad selling, bad emoting, but if you just want fast action…it was alright.

Alisha Edwards vs Masha Slamovich

Masha hits the Aja Kong style Spinning Backfist, Snap Suplex, Capture Suplex and Russian Death Device. Alisha had no chance, but when Gisele slides in to check on her, Masha and Gisele have words. If they don’t just feed Gisele to Masha, that could be a great match. Gisele has great striking ability and Masha being pure destruction could make for a fun match.

Bullet Club (Jay White & Chris Bey w/ The Good Brothers & Hikuleo) vs The Briscoes

Finesse and Redneck Kung Fu kick things off and we see some up and over, countering quick paced fun. Nothing of real impact but Bey gets the referee in the way and then Slingshots in with a great Arm Drag and a Too Sweet. Mark stops Bey before he starts and gets Jay in and start teaming up on Bey a bit. Mark cuts off Bey’s Dive attempt, pushes him into the corner, Yakuza Kick from Jay, Mark diving through a Dropkick, Jay takes flight into Bey and Bullet Club is looking pretty meek at the moment.

Switchblade still hasn’t been in yet and Bey keeps getting throttled. King Switch finally makes his presence felt, corrals both championship boys, Bey goes for a big tope and clears out Dem Boys. Commercial break and Switchblade gets tagged in and keeps working over Jay Briscoe. Good Brothers on commentary with Rehwoldt kissing ass and them purposefully getting Hannifan’s first name wrong, is good comedy. “Tom, he Phillips’d him in the chest!” – it’s a stupid joke, but I appreciate it. When the Good Brothers are given leeway, it feels like Talk’N’Shop and that’s beautiful.

Jay on Jay action, Mark takes the hot tag and we see the Sussex County Chicken putting in work and getting a near fall with an Iconoclasm. Tandem corner strikes, Assisted Neckbreaker, but Switchblade breaks up the pinfall. They try for the Neckbreaker/Froggy Bow but Bey clocks Jay with the Spin Kick. Electric Chair set up, but Switch blocks the Doomsday attempt, some Tornado Tag craziness, Yoshi Tonic from Chris Bey for a near fall. Switch tries to set up stuff with Chris, but The Briscoes have all the answers.

Mark tagged in, Froggy Bow attempt and miss, Bey tries for something but Mark rolls through, Small Package and Briscoes win!

Some ideas should’ve stayed dead. Reverse Battle…ugh. 

Nick Aldis is named the fourth member of the Impact OG team against Honor No More! That’s not a terrible return.

You know, Garret has a better look for Aces & Eights but even during his original run he wasn’t awful for how green he was. Wes however, was terrible and still is pretty bad. Garret has done most of the work and Wes’ spots are covering his lack of talent.

Commercial, Garret tags in Wes, Garret gets wiped out, Eddie trips up Wes and Vincent hits Orange Sunshine. Wes eats the pinfall and at least we didn’t have to deal with too much of Wes trying to wrestle.

Wes is by far the worst wrestler I’ve ever seen with the pedigree he should have. He makes David Sammartino look like Bruno. HNM tries to mob D’lo after the match but he gets his revenge. Beats them down, Sky High on Kenny, the crowd wants him to go up for the Lo Down, but OGK stops that before it happens. 

Contract signing goes the way they all do, but it hit good marks on the way. Josh made reference to being a fan, pulled out some old names, even reminded us of “Showtime” Eric Young and the “Don’t Fire Eric” chant. Josh met EY’s intensity for the most part, when the table flip comes into play it gets interesting. EY slugs Josh, D’Amore tries to stop the fight, Deaner tries to pull D’Amore away and D’Amore clocks Deaner, Josh tackles Joe and then EY breaks the VBD flag over D’Amore’s back. After that carnage ensues, they rip up the ring, expose the wood, cut open Josh and Piledriver him on the exposed wood. The champ is a bloody mess 3 days before the big match.

Overall Score: 7.25/10

While the contract signing went the way they all do, and the wrestling main event wasn’t really great; the show struck a lot of good notes. Aces & Eights was a solid call back, D’lo getting some payback was a nice way to tie up that threat, Good Brothers commentary was hilarious, Speedball eating his first singles loss to effectively “even” things up for the PPV is solid. Just a lot of really good story telling elements.

Now the Knockouts were admittedly a low point, but that’s also because I can’t buy Tasha as champion. As long as ANYONE else wins Queen of the Mountain, I think I’ll be more invested. Also, I’m not a fan of the Reverse Battle Royal coming back but; I think that’s slated for the Kickoff Show, so that’s tolerable.

Way more good than bad, and I’m looking forward to this show.
