Andrew’s IMPACT Results & Match Ratings: 7.7.2022

Against All Odds had some fun wrinkles with Maclin picking a fight with Sami Callihan, AMW with “possibly” their last rodeo, Motor City Machine Guns look to be back in form and Honor No More having TNA issues and internal issues.

Does PCO turn on the former ROH boys? Who is Speedball Mike Bailey’s first “fighting champion” opponent? What’s the main event picture look like with VBD done and dusted?

Results:

X Division Championship: Alan Angels vs Speedball Mike Bailey (c)

It’s a shock to no one that AEW is not my style of show. I gave it the old college try at first, enjoyed some early stuff but it quickly feel into the WCW 2000 pile of garbage bin for me. I know Alan Angels used to be a Dark Order mook, so I guess now I’ll see how he matches up to “Better at Karate Eric Bischoff Jr”. 

They shake hands, then Alan slaps Speedball to try and send a message but Speedball quickly snaps back at him, blocks a few offensive attempts and rocks Alan with a bunch of kicks and then a Triangle Moonsault after Alan powders. It’s not until they try to go back in that Alan slows down Speedball’s momentum, hits a Running STO on the apron, then a Frogsplash from the Apron to the outside keeps Alan in charge.

Alan strings together some offense, sidesteps Speedball into the corner, Bridging Northern Lights from the corner for 2 and then Alan goes to the top. Speedball counters the high risk attempt with a knee strike and then a few fun moves, standing Moonsault for 2. Ultima Weapon attempt misses and then we get to a little back and forth before Alan hits a Spanish Fly to slow them all down. Back and forth, Halo Breaker gives Alan a near fall.

Alan goes for more, Speedball counters into a Wristclutch Prawn Hold. Each try for a few moves, Flamingo Driver attempt, but Alan slips out, more attempts. Alan hits a Backbreaker, misses the Splash, Tornado corner Kick from Speedball, Ultima Weapon allows Speedball to retain.

Now some may say that an AEW jobber put up a solid match against the X Division champion, but with how die hard the AEW faithful are, and we’re in Angels’ home town…him getting a good showing garners more positives for IMPACT than negatives. VBD attack the two after Bailey tries to give some kudos to Angels. 

Deaner calls out Josh Alexander, and the VBD music hits again and Eric Young returns! EY is not happy with the fact the other VBD members tried to win in his stead, Deaner tries to continue the family ideal but EY shows his true colors and that things go through and belong to HIM.

Laredo Kid vs Trey Miguel

Trey comes out with obvious tape over the injured leg that Bailey beat on. So Laredo should probably win since Trey is “weakened”. 

Headlock tie up, Laredo trips Trey and then they run the ropes to a stalemate. Trey tries to do his usual perpetual motion offense but Laredo catches his foot and it puts emphasis on Trey being a step slower than usual. Trey ducks a Suicida, Trey tries a Moonsault, scream in pain but does a one legged Moonsault instead.

Commercial break hits, Laredo is in charge with a Half Crab, into ankle trip and then Figure Four. Trey gets to the ropes, fights through the pain to hit a missile dropkick, but Laredo kips up and then Trey one legged kip ups. Trey’s selling still looks moronic. Twisting Carry Bomb after the Jacky Bryant Heel Flip Kick with a high stack for 2. Trey is trying to rally himself, but then his leg gives out with more bad selling, Laredo slingshots him in, catches him, Michinoku Driver for 2! Laredo tries to finish things off, but Trey struggles through the counters and hits an Inverted CrossRhodes for the win.

Well Laredo kid is just enhancement talent at this point. I’m really hoping he’s on his way back to AAA and getting out of IMPACT since he’s been BEYOND worthless the last few months.

Killer Kelly is a pretty solid get for IMPACT. She has a short stint around the beginning of covid, or right before, and she’s a great combination of intensity, wrestling ability and aesthetically pleasing. This helps to keep the Knockouts Division trending in the right direction.

PCO w/Vincent vs Black Taurus w/Crazzy Steve

Rope run Uppercut from Taurus, Splash into the ropes from PCO, Taurus charges back and wails on PCO. Drives him into the corner and tries to ground the monster and keep him down with a big tackle to the front of the knee. PCO kicks out, fights back, rocks Taurus, Taurus tries a Double Axe Handle from the middle rope but PCO catches him with a Chokeslam.

High impact splash, dives and strikes makes the wonderful car crash spot that PCO …is on top of? PCO throws him in, DEANIMATOR! PCO looks to keep the momentum but Taurus gets feet up, back elbow, rocks PCO for a 2 count. Middle Rope Elbow Drop and another near fall. Taurus misses the Corkscrew Moonsault, PCO hits a rough looking PCO-sault but he wins the match!

Honor No More walk out celebrating and clapping…but this could be a set up. Crazzy Steve stays in the ring trying to protect Black Taurus, and before HNM can attack, Heath sneak attacks and hits the Wake Up Call on Kenny King and runs back into the crowd!

Rich Swann vs Shera

Speed versus strength in this match. Rich tries to stick and move, but Shera grabs him and starts slowing things down and muscling him over. Shera tosses Rich around, bullies him into the corner, tries a Splash and Snake Eyes himself so Rich goes on the attack.

Rich takes out Raj, rocks Shera, Phoenix Splash and Rich wins.

Deonna Purrazzo vs Mia Yim

A little bit of attempted tie ups and then both women start jawing and pushing and slapping each other. Mia gets a few early strikes before Deonna collects herself, hits the Drop Toe Hold and floats over into a Neck Crank before Mia can get to the ropes.

So I stopped with the play by play since the match started ramping up nicely. We saw both women pull out a lot of signatures, counters, resilient attacks. Mia kicked out of Queen’s Gambit and blocked the Fujiwara. Deonna kicked out of Code Blue and the first Package Piledriver. It wasn’t until a hockey fight, some Kawada Kicks from Mia, a second Package Piledriver and Eat Defeat strung together that Deonna stayed down for the 3.

Damn solid match and definitely a really good TV main event. 

Overall Score: 7/10

The beginning of the end could be on the horizon for VBD with Eric Young showing his true colors. Mia Yim gets her shot at Jordynne for Emergence! Deaner and Doering picked a fight with MCMG for next week! James Storm gets to play Cowboy versus Marine next week, and I’ll just say they did a good job keeping all the Against All Odds stories alive and pushing them forward. Even Tenille’s fear and questioning of the Masha threat was pretty fantastic.

So nothing crazy good but everything was serviceable and kept things interesting. Plus I do give them credit utilizing Alan Angels recent release to their advantage. He has a lot of Underdog fan support, and having him look good may do a slight disservice to Speedball, but it signal boosts IMPACT in the IWC. Therefore, all around decent.
