Carmelo Hayes on Mixed Fan Reactions After WWE Main Roster Debut
Carmelo Hayes acknowledged that fans were uncertain how to react to him after his main roster debut, saying it felt like they wanted to cheer even though he was being presented as a heel. In an interview with Michael Fairman he explained that the best heels are those fans learn to love and then are betrayed, but noted he hadn’t given them a reason to hate him, so allowing the audience to embrace him felt “warm” and validating.
Hayes was moved to SmackDown in the 2024 WWE Draft and challenged Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship on the April 26 edition of the show. He briefly teamed with The Miz in 2025 before winning the United States Championship in December, a title he lost last month to Sami Zayn — who then put the belt on the line against Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42, where Williams won in his PPV debut. Hayes also reflected on missing WrestleMania and reiterated WWE’s mantra that success is earned, not given.
