Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 42 Win Over Randy Orton Said to Be Pre-Booked Amid “WCW-Like” Backstage Chaos
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reports that, despite backstage chaos on the Saturday of WrestleMania 42 described as “like WCW,” the decision to have Cody Rhodes defeat Randy Orton in the night one main event was reportedly made prior to the day of the show. Sources told Meltzer the choice to go with Rhodes stood even as Pat McAfee’s surprise opt-out and the involvement of Jelly Roll stirred turmoil behind the scenes.
WWE insiders believe McAfee left partly due to intense fan negativity and negative reactions from WWE talent, with some performers arguing that the McAfee/Jelly Roll angle diluted the stronger Rhodes-Orton Legacy storyline. The company has since shifted creative direction toward a potential Rhodes vs. CM Punk program — a match teased on Raw — as plans evolve for future big events.
