Royce Keys Says Dark Matches Helped Him Find His Feet After WWE Debut
Royce Keys revealed that he wrestled several weeks of dark matches between his Royal Rumble appearance and his official SmackDown debut at his own request, pitching the idea to Paul “Triple H” Levesque so he could acclimate to WWE crowds and the weekly grind. Keys told Sam Roberts on SiriusXM that he opened shows on both Raw and SmackDown in different cities, and while online criticism about his TV absence briefly bothered him, veterans like Triple H, Bobby Roode, Cody and Randy reassured him not to worry.
By the time he defeated Berto on SmackDown, Keys said performing in WWE felt “like getting up, putting on your shoes, tying your shoes,” and he’s embraced the platform WWE gave him, including a produced video about the adversity he’s overcome and his desire to inspire others.
