Werner Herzog on Hulk Hogan’s Performance in New ‘Real American’ Documentary
Werner Herzog, the celebrated filmmaker and wrestling fan, appears in the new documentary Real American, which chronicles the life and career of Hulk Hogan. In the film Herzog discusses the performative nature of humans and the separation between performance and the person behind it, framing Hogan’s larger-than-life character as a crafted act rather than a direct reflection of reality.
According to reports, Herzog intentionally avoided learning Hogan’s real name to preserve that divide, underscoring his belief in the power and autonomy of performance. His philosophical take lends a unique, reflective voice to the documentary’s exploration of fame, identity, and the theatrical roots of professional wrestling.
