WWE Reportedly Signs Former IWGP Heavyweight Champion EVIL
Former NJPW star EVIL (Takaaki Watanabe) has reportedly signed with WWE, PWInsider says, following earlier reporting by Dave Meltzer in late January that he was expected to be WWE-bound. Sources in Japan tell reporters that the 39-year-old is unlikely to keep the EVIL ring name upon his arrival.
In the February 2, 2026 Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer called Watanabe a solid worker and effective heel while criticizing the overuse of his NJPW stable and describing his IWGP Heavyweight Championship run as “terrible,” though he praised EVIL’s work with Aaron Wolf. The move to WWE marks a new chapter for Watanabe as he transitions from New Japan to a global audience.
