Bully Ray Says Cena’s John Cena Classic Announcement Was Confusing but Effective
Bully Ray admitted that John Cena’s announcement of the “John Cena Classic” at WWE Backlash came off as confusing, acknowledging that the concept wasn’t immediately clear to fans or talent. He suggested the presentation left some questions about what the tournament or event actually entailed.
Despite the ambiguity, Ray said Cena’s promo work ultimately made the moment successful, crediting Cena’s presence and delivery for selling the idea on a big stage. In Ray’s view, strong in-ring charisma and mic work can overcome a muddled concept at a major show like Backlash.
