Cody Rhodes Wants More ’90s-Style Retirements Where Wrestlers Aren’t Actually Retired
Cody Rhodes has expressed a preference for the old-school era of retirements, where a farewell wasn’t always permanent. It’s been a notable year for high-profile send-offs — Goldberg, John Cena, AJ Styles, Hiroshi Tanahashi and more — and even Brock Lesnar staged a seemingly final moment at WrestleMania 42 by leaving his boots and gloves in the ring before returning a month later.
Rhodes argues that the ’90s approach to retirements keeps nostalgia alive and preserves the possibility of future returns, adding drama to storylines and big events. He believes those ambiguous goodbyes can be powerful storytelling tools that benefit both performers and the business.
