Eric Bischoff: If WCW Hadn’t Forced WWF to Go Live, WWE and AEW Might Not Exist
With WWE and AEW in the modern wrestling landscape and conversations renewed after Ted Turner’s passing, former WCW president Eric Bischoff made a provocative claim on his 83 Weeks podcast. Bischoff argued that WCW’s push during the Monday Night Wars forced the then-WWF to go live and chase the 18–49 demographic, changes he says gave rise to the Attitude Era and ultimately saved WWE — and even paved the way for AEW to later exist on a Turner network.
Bischoff called those pivots “the only reason that WWE exists today” and added that going live and targeting younger viewers were critical responses to WCW’s dominance, a point he expects will draw debate. He framed the late-90s competition as the decisive factor that reshaped wrestling television and set the stage for the industry’s current form.
