Eric Bischoff on Aleister Black: Paul Heyman’s Early Backing and His WWE Exit
On his 83 Weeks podcast, former WWE SmackDown Executive Director Eric Bischoff recalled how Paul Heyman was “huge” on Aleister Black when he first arrived on the main roster, even ready to make a serious commitment to him. Bischoff said Heyman’s enthusiasm made him pay attention, so he spoke with Black a few times to get a feel for his mindset and character as the company considered how to position him.
Bischoff’s comments gain weight because he served as SmackDown Executive Director in 2019 while Heyman filled the RAW Executive Director role — the same era as Black’s call-up. Black’s release was later announced as part of a post-WrestleMania 42 round of cuts in April 2026 that also included Kairi Sane, Zoey Stark and Santos Escobar.
