ESPN2 to Air First Hour of WWE Backlash on May 9
WWE announced on Friday’s SmackDown that the first hour of Backlash will air on ESPN2 live from Tampa on May 9, beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The move follows WWE’s decision to put the opening hour of WrestleMania on cable, a strategy designed to broaden reach for its premium live events.
WrestleMania’s free-to-cable first hour performed well — Night 1 on ESPN2 averaged 1.6 million viewers and a 0.62 18-49 rating, while Night 2 on ESPN drew 1.8 million and a 0.65 — and WWE will hope Backlash, which features Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker, IYO SKY vs. Asuka, and Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Title against Jacob Fatu, generates similar interest.
