Ex-WWE Writer Chris Dunn: Vince McMahon Would Have Kept New Day “Forever”

Former WWE writer Chris Dunn says Vince McMahon would never have allowed New Day to be released, arguing the trio were seen as a “national treasure.” Speaking on the Public Enemies Podcast, Dunn reacted to WWE’s post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts that included Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods and suggested TKO is sometimes scapegoated for corporate decisions McMahon also made. Dunn added that McMahon might fire talent rather than ask veterans to accept steep pay cuts, a choice that led Kingston and Woods to depart while Big E remains with WWE in a broadcasting role after his 2022 neck injury.

Dunn also recalled Survivor Series 2018 as an example of McMahon’s willingness to play power games with creative, saying Vince deliberately had SmackDown lose every match to embarrass Road Dogg and bumped New Day to the kickoff show so their win wouldn’t count. The angle still saw Xavier Woods take a pinfall while The Usos won the multi-team bout, and Dunn — who worked for WWE from 2016–2021 — praised Road Dogg as one of the best creative minds in wrestling before his resignation as SmackDown co-lead writer in March.
