John Cena Classic Championship’s Fan-Vote Format Draws Criticism from Lance Storm
John Cena has announced the John Cena Classic Championship for WWE programming, a tournament that will pair main roster stars with NXT talent and crown a champion based on fan voting rather than strictly on in-ring wins. That means competitors could lose matches yet still become the John Cena Classic Champion if the audience chooses them, a twist intended to boost fan engagement across WWE’s roster.
On Wrestling Observer Live, Lance Storm warned the fan-vote format could create real locker-room and creative problems, arguing higher-paid main roster performers may be reluctant to elevate lower-paid NXT talent if a popularity vote can leapfrog pay and perceived value. Storm suggested uncertainty over who will ultimately get the push could discourage cooperative match work and even prompt questions from executives about long-term roster investments.
