Kairi Sane Could Return at WWE Backlash to Finish Asuka vs. IYO SKY Storyline

WWE insiders tell Bryan Alvarez there’s a better-than-even chance Kairi Sane will appear at Backlash this Saturday in Tampa to help conclude the long-running Asuka vs. IYO SKY program. A singles match between SKY and Asuka is scheduled for the pay-per-view, and Sane — released in WWE’s post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts — was a central figure in the storyline as the wrestler caught between the two.

Sane returned to WWE in 2023 after a 2021 departure that saw her work for Stardom and NJPW, and fans have rallied behind her since the release with #WeWantKairi, while peers like AJ Styles expressed surprise at the move. It remains unclear if any Backlash appearance would be a one-off, but Sane tweeted on April 28 that she has “never walked away” and still loves the work, leaving the door open for a potential surprise return.
