Matt Hardy Warns Unionization Could Sink Smaller Wrestling Promotions
With pro-wrestling unionization a hot topic in 2026 amid reports that TKO has asked some WWE names to take pay cuts, Matt Hardy told his Extreme Life podcast that collective bargaining may be realistic for deep-pocketed companies like WWE and AEW but could cripple smaller promotions. Hardy said the costs of meeting union standards — particularly insurance and coverage obligations — could put many independent companies out of business.
Hardy added that while unionization would be a win for talent at major companies, it might force smaller promotions to embrace truly independent-contractor arrangements; he cited his and Jeff’s situation at TNA as an example of that model in practice.
