The second round is soon upon us, and I told all of you hussies before that you had enough time to steal the spotlight. And now it’s mine. Mance Warner speaks.
“ROH…! Ol’ Mancer’s home. I’m known all over the world for fighting, knocking people out with these fists. I’m known for hitting the pay window, I’m known for tearing my body down and somehow always standing back up. STP, you got history with Ol’ Mancer, Eddie & Ortiz. Lee, you got the Pure Wrestling gold. I’m looking at you now, I’m talking to you now. You and me gonna fight. I ain’t known for following rules, I ain’t known for armbars, I’m known for punching people in the mouth, I’m known for swinging chairs. But I ain’t gonna be able to do none of that, I gotta wrestle you. Not outside the ring, but inside the ring.
“Proving Ground! Lee, Ol’ Mancer gonna hit the pay window, I’m gonna put you down. STP, be watching! Ol’ Mancer’s home. This is where I do my violence, this is where I do my work. Lee, you and me, yeah! Yeah! YEAH!” The Southern Psychopath is ready, but will #TAIGASTYLE be able to figure him out?
Time to Chop It Up with Caprice Coleman.
This week, Coleman’s special guest is the ROH Women’s World Champion, Athena! Coleman says today might be one of the greatest interviews he’s ever done, solely on the fact that he has THE ROH Women’s World Champion, the Forever Champion, Athena. Athena says she was about to say, he needs to introduce her right, she was about to walk out of here. Show some respect. No, that’s why she’s here, he is gonna put some respect on her name. First, congratulations on not just days as champion, but her number of defenses surpasses all other champions for decades. There is no other champion that has been champion as long as she has, with as many defenses.
For maybe over a year, Athena was on every episode, either defending the title or defending on the Proving Grounds. Coleman does not know any other champion in history, male or female, that has done that, so congratulations. She thanks him for that, though she also feels he’s just trying to get a Minion number, but they can talk about that. That’s just a hard intro and she likes it. Some people have had their statuses revoked, they can renews Coleman’s. Coleman appreciates that. But he does want to ask. This reign she has, did it come to her by surprise and she started riding it? Or did she always know it would be like this?
Athena says looking back at the beginning, from her shift in persona, as it were, many saw her as the gullible, young, energetic girl trying to find her place in a new company. At some point, she just said, “F it.” She was tired of putting her best foot forward, being a team player, trying to help others, to where she herself was not moving anywhere. She was having some of the best matches of her career on Dark and Elevation, but she wasn’t getting past it. Something in her snapped and she decided not to do this for anyone but her. It wasn’t a real surprise after awhile that she’s in this position, because she is focused on her and making history, solidifying her name not just in ROH but in all of pro-wrestling.
Coleman remembers back when she started in ROH a long time ago, this is not the same woman as then. Coleman believes she has not only evolved, but has brought others along with her, from her Minions, Billie & Diamante, to past students like Maya World. Athena immediately calls Maya an “ungrateful b*tch.” Well, with that, Athena has proven again and again that her being Forever Champion is almost reality. So many times, Coleman has seen Athena’s opponents coming, and yet never sees them winning. Athena says cuz they’re not. And she says that cuz it’s true.
In ROH, no one thinks about Nigel or Bryan anymore, they think about Athena. They think about THE longest reigning champion in all of company history! They don’t think about how Samoa Joe used to destroy people, or Christopher Daniels hit the BME. They think about Athena. And many times, people forget she got her start here in ROH, her first match was somewhere in Baltimore, and she was just happy to be here. Now she’s happy to be running the place, and they should be happy to have a job because of her.
Coleman asks when did it get to where Athena goes from wanting a match, wanting to be on a show, wanting to be champion, then becoming champion and wanting everyone to recognize that she is the face of a company. Athena says many want to discredit her. They see her talent and ability but discredit her as “The Face of ROH,” simply because they wanna see her in other places. It is frustrating when you get to the nitty gritty and see that she works hard, puts everything she has in the ring. When she tore her Achilles, she truly didn’t know if she was ever gonna wrestle again. She not only tore the Achilles in half but off the bone.
The surgeon who worked on her worked for FIFA at the time, he only ever saw that kind of injury one other time and that guy never made it back to sports. That was a bit defeating, but Athena treats every match like it could be her last. She doesn’t know if her Achilles will ever give out again, but maybe nothing does. But Athena wants to look back at her career and not be disappointed with her last match. She doesn’t want to have that knowledge of how she didn’t give it her all. She truly does feel like so many people are out there saying, “But I don’t wanna watch Honor Club…” No, watch Honor Club! Watch what she does!
When the right person comes along and proves they are better, then they will have her title. But that’s not gonna happen. The rest of this Chop It Up will be played next week, same night as Athena steps back onto the Proving Ground! Hyan gets her chance after missing out on Survival of the Fittest, can she survive going 1v1 with the champ? Or will Athena cross another name off the list in ten minutes or less?
Maya World VS Trish Adora w/ Shane Taylor Promotions!
Speaking of Survival of the Fittest, #ThatGirl was runner-up, and perhaps the only reason she lost was because of Billie backing Athena up! The Afropunk herself felt close to taking that title, will the winner here get right back in line for a shot at the Fallen Goddess?

They’re frustrated! But they’re not dwelling on it! He proved Vanilla Baby belongs in the main event!

As a matter of fact, they are more talented, more creative, and more innovative than the current World Six Man Champions! There is NO ONE on their level! If not for that slip and fall, maybe Dez would’ve won big tonight. But Fox makes sure to show respect to Dez after he was pushed this far. Fox offers words of encouragement, and a handshake. Dez takes it, the fans applaud, will we see these two run it back again some day? Or else will want to “guest star” on the Whole Fox’n Show?
My Thoughts:
A very good ROH that was again two hours because whatever, they still don’t have a standard run time. Good promos from Athena, both post PPV and Chop It Up, though the latter made the former seem a bit redundant. And there’s still part two of Chop It Up next week, seems like they’re making up for the lack of promos there’ve been lately. Athena will likely beat Hyan in Proving Grounds, just as she’ll keep going in the Women’s Owen Hart Cup. It feels like Maya is being built up to do what Billie couldn’t (or rather, what they wouldn’t let Billie do). Maya got a great win off Adora, and Maya could use the time between now and the next major ROH PPV to build herself up as a real contender.
Great title match from Davis VS Adam, but of course Davis won. Very good Proving Ground from Castle & Outrunners VS Frat House, and very good win for Castle & Outrunners to essentially start their reign. Lethal Twist going after them was a bit surprising but it’s a good move for them after losing to Bandido. Bandido VS Volador was awesome stuff, but given this was last week and before Double or Nothing, Bandido winning was a given. And great match from Fox VS Dez tonight, great main event showing for Dez, but I figured Fox would win to keep his reign going. There are so many possibilities for Fox’s next challenger, he’s going to have a great reign.
My Score: 8.8/10
