Today In Pro Wrestling History: May 26th

This may very well be the worst day of the last two months in terms of stretching the concept of memorable moments. I found a pocket of things I don’t dislike, without having to resort to fodder like birthdays. Let’s see how the mental gymnastics played out!

• WWF Monday Night Raw: The Hart Foundation (c) vs Shawn Michaels & Steve Austin (1997)

In a pairing that many may have forgotten ever happened, Shawn and Steve took the mentality of “My enemy’s enemy, is my friend”, so when Bret reformed the Hart Foundation, a truce was made between Shawn and Steve. They may have been reluctant partners, but only they could make tag team wrestling look so easy while bickering. Shawn hit the Sweet Chin Music on Bulldog, followed by The Stunner, and that was all that was needed. But the scene afterwards wasn’t celebration, it was the Hart Foundation attacking. Austin slid out of the ring to gather 1 tag title, and chase off Bret, while Shawn was left alone in the ring to fight the rest of the stable.

• AAA Triplemania IX: Lucha de Apuestas Dog Collar Hair Match: Pirata Morgan vs Sangre Chicano vs El Cobarde  (2001)

This was the first Triplemania back in a bigger building in a few years. La Plaza de Toros was supposed be a jump off point for a larger Japanese expansion. The main event was held between three legendary villains who just couldn’t co-exist with each other anymore. In a violent technical brawl, Pirata Morgan ended up losing the match of the legends and his hair along with it.

• NJPW Best of Super Juniors Tour: No Limit Breakup (2011)

As Naito was starting to gain more momentum in the singles division, a rift was growing between him and Yujiro Takahashi. After another failed attempt to regain the tag titles from Bad Intentions, Takahashi had enough. After losing a six man match to Tenzan, Wataru Inoue and Yuji Nagata, Takahashi attacked Tetsuya Naito and joined Gedo, Jado and Masato Tanaka as a part of Chaos.

• JCW Hatchet Attacks (2012)

This was during the JCW iPPV era. They were putting on PPVs that were supposed to rival the vibe of The Gathering of the Juggalos. Music, madness and wrestling. We got a match with Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman, Scott Hall playing the outside interference against The Headbangers and Necro Butcher was Shawn Daivari’s surprise opponent. The main event was 2 Tuff Tony taking on Kongo Kong for the vacant JCW Heavyweight Championship. Tony ended up winning and kicking off his 523 day reign.

• IGF Genome 26 (2013)

This event was built around the Genome Tournament for the year. Hideki Suzuki defeated Akira Jo, Crusher Kawaguchi and Atsushi Sawada to win the tournament. The finals was a rematch of the their first round match in 2012, which Sawada won, and also eventually won the tournament last year. The main event was names many people know at least, it was a tag match between Bobby Lashley & Kazuyuki Fujita vs Naoya Ogawa & Shinichi Suzukawa. So a special attraction mixed tag and a tournament all in one event!

Holy stretching definitions Batman. Most of these events are a bit older and not overly Earth shattering, but every day needs an article…even days that everyone hates apparently. What did May 26th do to people? Sheesh.
