Chris Jericho Says Ditching Y2J Was Biggest Risk of His Career
Chris Jericho says revamping his WWE persona in 2007 — cutting his hair, switching to trunks and scrapping his Y2J countdown — was the biggest risk of his career. In an interview with Dan Marston he explained he didn’t “wanna be a nostalgia act,” even instructing announcers to stop calling him Y2J as he launched a new look and presentation.
Jericho likened the change to KISS taking off the makeup and cited David Bowie as a creative inspiration for constant reinvention. That philosophy has carried into AEW since 2019, where he’s undergone several character turns, from “Le Champion” and the Jericho Appreciation Society to iterations with The Learning Tree.
