Francesco Akira earns IWGP Junior Heavyweight title shot, challenges YOH at Korakuen Hall
Francesco Akira secured a number one contendership for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship by winning a four-way over Master Wato, SHO and Kosei Fujita, earning a title shot against champion YOH on July 6 at Korakuen Hall during NJPW’s Road to G1 show (streaming live on NJPW World). The bout saw YOH briefly involved to counter interference from SHO’s House of Torture, and after Akira revived the fallen champion he warned YOH his reign is over, finishing by striking YOH with a belt and posing with the title.
YOH, fresh off winning the 2026 Best of the Super Juniors and capturing the belt from DOUKI, will make his first defense against Akira, a United Empire member and former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion who has yet to claim singles gold in NJPW. The July 6 card also features G1 Climax play-in matches El Phantasmo vs. Ryohei Oiwa and OSKAR vs. Yujiro Takahashi, plus a three-way tornado tag with Tiger Mask & Jado, Taiji Ishimori & Gedo, and Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Dick Togo.
