Lee McAteer Explains Why He Sold PROGRESS Wrestling to Nikki Cross and Big Damo
Lee McAteer told Cultaholic he sold PROGRESS Wrestling because he believed Nikki Cross and Big Damo were best positioned to take the promotion further than he could, citing a pivotal conversation after a dinner in Las Vegas and mounting personal and financial pressures. McAteer said he had given everything he could to the company and reached a point where the energy and resources required to move PROGRESS to the next level were beyond him.
McAteer also revealed he received higher monetary offers but prioritized finding custodians he trusted over the top bid, leading to the sale to Cross and Damo. PROGRESS was founded in 2011 by Jim Smallman, Jon Briley and Glen Joseph, was acquired by McAteer and Martyn Best in 2022, merged with DEFY Wrestling in 2024, and the transfer to Nikki Cross and Big Damo was confirmed on May 26, 2026.
