Maria Kanellis-Bennett Says Managers Have a Diminished Role in Modern Wrestling

Former WWE and AEW star Maria Kanellis-Bennett commented on the shrinking presence of managers in today’s wrestling scene, saying their prominence has waned compared to past eras. Drawing on her experience in multiple promotions, Kanellis argued that shifts in presentation, booking priorities and the way talent handles promos have reduced the need for traditional managerial figures.

She noted that while managers once played a central role in storytelling and character work, modern wrestling’s emphasis on in-ring performance, social media-driven personas and self-contained promos has left fewer openings for those roles. Kanellis suggested the position isn’t gone for good, but that it has been relegated to a more specialized or occasional function in contemporary shows.
