Paul Heyman: AEW Is an ECW-Inspired Alternative That Changed Talent Pay
Paul Heyman told Chris Van Vliet on the Insight Podcast that AEW has reshaped the modern wrestling landscape by increasing talent compensation and providing a distinct alternative to WWE. Heyman credited Tony Khan’s deep pockets for driving up pay, noted AEW’s presence on a viable network and unique style, and said the promotion has pushed the industry to work harder to improve.
Heyman also traced AEW’s influences back to ECW, likening Jon Moxley’s persona to Sandman and comparing AEW’s overall presentation to the Rob Van Dam–Jerry Lynn rivalry of the late 1990s, with PWG as a stylistic bridge to today. While he welcomed another promotion that captures fans’ imaginations, Heyman acknowledged WWE’s continued advantages in distribution and historical lineage.
