Sami Zayn Says Royal Rumble Loss Was First Time His Faith “Was Shook” Before WWE Title Win

Newly crowned Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn told Sam Roberts and Megan Morant on Raw Recap that while the loss to Roman Reigns in Montreal was a heartbreaker, it was his January Royal Rumble defeat to Drew McIntyre that first left him questioning whether he had missed his window. Zayn said he always believed in his talent and pointed to matches with top stars like Drew, Roman, Cody and Seth as proof, but admitted that coming so close and not securing the top prize was maddening.

Zayn also reflected on his early career, noting he didn’t fit the traditional mold and once thought merely stepping into a WWE ring would be the pinnacle of his dream. Coming off his Night of Champions victory — pinning Cody Rhodes in a triple threat that also included Gunther to capture his first Undisputed WWE Championship — Zayn called the achievement “mind boggling” given how unattainable it once seemed.
