Tiger Mask IV Opens Up About 2020 Diverticulitis, Confirms Post-Retirement Back Surgery
Wrestling legend Tiger Mask IV revealed that a 2020 diverticulitis operation and subsequent loss of abdominal strength played a major role in his decision to retire, with a farewell set for July 7, 2026. His retirement show will feature two singles matches—against Black Tiger (Rocky Romero) and ‘Dynamite Kid’ Tommy Billington—and comes after he quietly endured surgery, a temporary stoma bag and a rapid return to the New Japan Dojo while keeping the diagnosis private from all but his immediate family.
Tiger Mask also confirmed he will undergo back surgery after his final bout, saying his body has taken years of punishment and that doctors are surprised he can still perform at all. He’s scheduled for a six-man tag the day before his retirement on the NJPW Road to G1 Climax card, and says he intends to be “Tiger Mask” to the very end despite the medical toll.
