Why SmackDown Was Commercial-Free For Its Opening Hour
The June 19 edition of Friday Night SmackDown opened with Sami Zayn serving as guest referee for the Undisputed WWE Championship match between GUNTHER and champion Cody Rhodes. Viewers noticed the program’s first hour aired without traditional commercial breaks.
WWE and the broadcaster kept the opening hour commercial-free as a precaution in case NBA Finals coverage ran long and threatened to overlap SmackDown’s scheduled timeslot, allowing the show to continue uninterrupted if the game extended.
