Nnamdi Madubuike’s Recovery Moving in Right Direction

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said everything is “pointed in the right direction” regarding Madubuike’s recovery from a serious neck injury.

The defensive tackle suffered the injury during Week 2 last season and underwent surgery in April. Doctors believe the procedure will allow him to resume playing during the 2026 season, although Baltimore has not provided a specific return date.

DeCosta said the Ravens expect to have more information within the next two weeks. Madubuike’s potential return would restore one of the most important players on a Baltimore defense preparing to compete in a crowded AFC North.

Jared Verse Ready to Establish His Own Browns Defense

Verse admitted that being traded by the Los Angeles Rams initially hurt, particularly after he had developed relationships and envisioned spending much of his career with the organization.

That disappointment began turning into excitement after he arrived in Cleveland and heard head coach Todd Monken’s vision for the Browns. Verse said he wants Cleveland’s defense to develop an aggressive identity built around getting into the opponent’s face.

Penei Sewell was selected as the NFL’s top offensive tackle by a panel of eight Associated Press football writers. Sewell received three first-place votes and finished with 55 points. Defensive lineman Pat O’Connor announced his retirement after nine seasons in the NFL. O’Connor spent seven seasons with Tampa Bay and was part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl championship team during the 2020 season. He played his final two years for Detroit, the franchise that originally selected him in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

O’Connor appeared in 88 career games, making three starts while recording 52 tackles, six quarterback hits and 2.5 sacks.

Madubuike’s recovery is the most important immediate development. Baltimore can prepare alternatives during training camp, but there is no simple replacement for a proven interior defender capable of disrupting both the running game and the quarterback.

Verse and the Browns face a different challenge. Cleveland did not acquire him to imitate Garrett. The trade will ultimately be judged on whether Verse can become the foundation of a younger defense while the additional draft capital helps repair the rest of the roster.

Buffalo’s pressure will not disappear when training camp begins. Dawkins is correct that Allen cannot carry the entire organization through January by himself. The Bills changed coaches because reaching the playoffs was no longer enough, and everyone surrounding their quarterback will be judged by whether this season ends differently.
