Ryan Gold’s attorney denies the NFL’s gambling allegations, Dak Prescott embraces Super Bowl expectations, Saquon Barkley’s burglary investigation expands and more.

The attorney representing suspended Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold has denied the NFL’s allegations and promised to appeal the league’s decision.

Elsewhere, Dak Prescott made it clear that anything short of a Super Bowl remains unacceptable in Dallas, authorities are investigating whether the attempted burglary at Saquon Barkley’s home is connected to a larger operation, and Cam Skattebo created concern with a failed backflip while recovering from a serious leg injury.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for July 20, 2026!

Ryan Gold’s Attorney Denies NFL Gambling Allegations

Attorney Mike Caspino called the accusations against Gold “blatantly false” after the NFL suspended the Cardinals’ director of college scouting indefinitely for violating the league’s gambling policy.

The NFL concluded that Gold participated in football wagering and shared confidential information about Arizona’s draft selections before the picks were publicly announced. Caspino disputed both findings, claiming Gold’s wife participated in small weekly wagers with friends and that Gold was not involved.

Caspino also argued that Gold did not know which players the Cardinals planned to select before the draft room finalized its decisions. He said only owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort possessed that information and promised to appeal the suspension.

The appeal will determine whether Gold can reduce or overturn a suspension involving two of the league’s most sensitive issues: football wagering and the distribution of confidential competitive information.

Dak Prescott Embraces Super Bowl-or-Bust Expectations

Prescott said winning a Super Bowl is the only significant accomplishment remaining in his career and that he embraces the expectations surrounding the Cowboys.

Dallas finished 7-9-1 last season, extending a championship drought that dates back to the 1995 campaign. The Cowboys have also missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons and have not advanced beyond the Divisional Round during that span.

Prescott believes Dallas’ productive offense can be complemented by an improved defense under new coordinator Christian Parker. The Cowboys ranked seventh in scoring and second in total offense last season but allowed more points than any other team.

Prescott is correct that lowered expectations would accomplish nothing, but Dallas now has to prove its offseason defensive overhaul was substantial enough to support its quarterback rather than waste another productive offensive season.

Authorities Examine Possible Connection to Athlete Burglary Ring

Federal authorities could become involved in the investigation of the attempted burglary at Barkley’s Pennsylvania home. At least one intruder entered the residence early Saturday morning while Barkley and his family were inside. The suspects fled before police arrived, nobody was injured and investigators initially found no indication that anything had been stolen.

Local investigators plan to consult federal authorities to determine whether the incident is connected to a wider pattern of organized groups targeting professional athletes. Police are searching for at least two suspects and have identified a white SUV that may be connected to the case.

The most important development remains that Barkley and his family were unharmed. The possibility of a larger operation, however, makes the incident more than an isolated attempted break-in and could lead to increased security precautions throughout professional sports.

Cam Skattebo Says He Is Fine After Failed Backflip

Skattebo caused a brief scare when he attempted a backflip during a WWE-themed appearance at Fanatics Fest and landed awkwardly.

The Giants running back is still recovering from the fractured tibia, dislocated ankle and torn deltoid ligament that ended his rookie season. Skattebo stood up immediately after the failed stunt and later said the soft stage surface affected his landing.

Skattebo insisted he was unharmed and remains confident in his recovery. The Giants are expected to build a significant portion of their offense around his physical running style under a new coaching staff.

The stunt appears to have ended without another injury, but it was an unnecessary risk for a player whose health will be central to New York’s offense. Training camp is close enough that proving toughness on a convention stage accomplishes nothing.

Dontayvion Wicks Wants to Reward Eagles’ Confidence

Wicks wants to prove he was worth Philadelphia’s investment after the Eagles acquired him from Green Bay and signed him to a one-year, $12.5 million extension through the 2027 season.

Philadelphia sent a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round selection to Green Bay for Wicks. The receiver is also familiar with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and run game coordinator Ryan Mahaffey from their previous time with the Packers.

Wicks recorded career lows of 30 receptions, 332 yards and two touchdowns last season after falling behind several other options in Green Bay. He now joins a rebuilt Philadelphia receiver group led by DeVonta Smith and featuring first-round pick Makai Lemon, Marquise Brown and Elijah Moore.

The Eagles do not need Wicks to become their primary receiver. They need him to provide reliable depth and help replace the production lost when A.J. Brown was traded to New England.

Grey Zabel Welcomes Renewed Rivalry With Rams

Seattle guard Grey Zabel said he hates the Rams as a rival but appreciates the physical, high-level competition they bring to the NFC West.

Seattle and Los Angeles played three times last season, with the games decided by a combined seven points. The Seahawks won the final meeting in the NFC Championship Game before capturing the Super Bowl.

Zabel identified Rams defensive lineman Kobie Turner as one of his most difficult individual opponents. He also welcomed the challenge created by Los Angeles acquiring Myles Garrett rather than expressing concern about facing another elite pass rusher.

The Rams and Seahawks have moved beyond being division opponents who simply see each other twice per year. Their three-game series helped determine the NFC championship last season, and both teams enter 2026 expecting the rivalry to influence the conference again.

Gold’s appeal adds another chapter to a case the NFL will want resolved before the regular season begins. The original findings were severe, but his attorney’s response directly challenges the league’s version of how both the alleged wagering and disclosure of draft information occurred.

Dallas faces a more familiar dispute—whether its annual confidence will finally become postseason success. Prescott continues to accept the pressure, but the Cowboys’ championship chances will depend less on another declaration and more on whether their reconstructed defense can become merely competent.

The Barkley investigation carries the most serious consequences beyond football. Organized groups targeting athletes inside their homes represent a threat that no team can solve through roster moves or improved game planning, and another high-profile incident will increase pressure for coordinated security measures across the league.
